Can I use a parallel port or need a mesa card? was created by GambleGarage
Newb here. Got a sherline lathe and controller no pc yet. Can I use an older pc or a pci card with a parallel port or does it need to be a mesa card?
I have a raspberry pi and older laptop neither with a parallel port or looking to maybe buying an old desktop with parallel port if that will work. Or a parallel-usb adapter? I’m not sure what route to go

An older desktop PC with a built in parallel port is probably your best bet for a first
LinuxCNC project.
(Laptops are generally not a good choice and USB-Parallel ports will not work
because USB is not real-time)

_probably_ but not as guaranteed as a built in parallel port

Does not mention Linux anywhere, and even some that do mention it do not work.
Can not see the chip on it, usually NetMOS and MosChip do work.

The Tower version has a built in parallel port and works nicely with LinuxCNC.
-EDIT
Do keep in mind that if you already have a usable PC, the price of the above PC is higher than Mesa 5i25 or 6i25 or 7i92, probably close to Mesa 7i96S, so it much better to get the Mesa board, especially the last two as they are Ethernet boards, so later if you change the PC you have a single RJ45 to unplug and plug.
