About a year ago i bought a Techno-CNC LC-3024 from a school district surplus auction. 

The original controller equipment was not included and the surplus warehouse knew nothing about it. Probably still bolted to a wall in a high school. 

The only piece that was included but not physically attached to the frame was the VFD for the spindle. Lots of cabling, touchoff plate, that's about it. 

I forget the details for the spindle but it spins freely. I haven't gotten it anywhere near a 220v outlet to test the VFD and spindle. 

Uses ElectroCraft E243 brushed servos that seem to work smoothly when connected to a battery and 1000ppr optical quadrature encoders with differential output. 

I am under the impression that these are marketed aggressively to schools and that they typically don't see a lot of use, and get sent out as surplus a year or two after someone hoses the OS on the control PC and nobody can be bothered to figure out how to fix it. Maybe because they don't have a service contract and can't get a PO approved for some paid support. This one has a lot of 2011 manufacturing dates on it. 

Other than 3d printers i am a n00b in this space but have had some conversations with my brother-in-law who is a certified machinist and has dabbled in LinuxCNC. 

It seems like, as far as kinematics are concerned, it could be reasonably simple to use three G320x servodrives and a parallel port BOB to get it up and running in some basic way, and then later i could upgrade to an fpga card or something if i feel like i need it. 

Am i completely wrong? is there something I'm missing?

You are not wrong, that should do just fine.
I do not know the current price for a G320x, but if it is in the 160$ range as it was when i got them, get new servo motor/drive sets from Leadshine or some that are used a lot on youtube that i can not recall the name/model, should be very close in price for the set, not just the drive.

The G320x is a little cheaper these days, about the same as US-based authorized Leadshine distributors charge ($120-140ish?).

The fact that i can get a DCS810 out of hong kong for less than half that is a little concerning. I expect that if there were warranty or support issues, Leadshine USA wouldn't even talk to me about it.

So, instead, i bought three "open box" g320x for $90/ea.
