Progress, turned off secure boot and now LinuxCNC runs the demo.
I get one other error, "No parport registered at 0x378.  This is not always an error."
Computer has an aftermarket pci serial and parallel port card.
What's up with that?
Thanks,
marty

In a terminal
sudo lspci -v
See if there is a parallel port and at what address.

I did type
sudo lspci -v
did i?
-
The port is there and working, but there is no info on capabilities as you did not use sudo.
The port address to type into the wizard is 0xe000

Yes you did type sudo lspci -v, I think I did too.
I put the address in the wizard for the parallel port.
I get the same no par port registered error but with the new address 0xe000.
Maybe I should get a new pci parallel port card.

Last post is with sudo, the previous was not as can be seen by "permission denied" for capabilities.
Did you try setting the address and running LinuxCNC?
