Like I said I was using rodw's rpi-image builder, so that what I was doing different. And using a 6.12.8 kernel. So that's our differences. Apparently the commit for the 6.12.8 didn't include patches for the full preempt kernel (god I could be wrong here as well).

We used this around Nov-Dec 2023 to generate images with a patched 6.1.54 kernel from the 6.1.y branch. As most things people want the latest & greatest. Whether it makes a lot of difference when using Mesa hardware (or a 7c81 self built clone) I can't really say.

[just thinking aloud]
But I think for the prebuilt images having spi turned on as default, the latest code base with the hm2_spix driver and mesaflash 3.5.10 would really make the image more user friendly on the RPi5.

It might make more sense either to stay wit the 6.6.y branch (that's stable I believe) or just jumping straight to the 6.13.y branch.
[/just thinking aloud]

Seems good, git wanted the https: bit but meh.

Much appreciated and I've got a better understanding......wonder why using 6.12.8 kernel sources and rod's image builder produces such different results.

Damn this has been confusing. Thanks for sticking in there and not calling me a knob head. ;)

Hmmmm might be just easier to use an amd64 platform and EPP interface. Or just sell up and try something else.

Last time I built the 6.12 rt kernel for the RPi 5 was about 2 months ago and was pretty straight forward (since I don't use it for LinuxCNC so didn't need additional patches). Only installing it was a bit weird as described at github.com/by/RT-Kernel

The 6.12 kernel is with LTS and already released, so that might be a better choice, depending on if you want a more stable kernel vs newest.

To be perfectly honest I can't recall any instability or kernel crashed in the last 10 years. If I have had any it would be down to myself doing something silly to cause it. In using Linux, specifically Mint, as a daily driver I haven't seen any stability issues. I use Linux exclusively, except for the rare occasions I need to use my Needham Eeprom programmer then I pull out an old Thin client running Win98.

To be fair I'm not one that has to be "on the bleeding edge", so I don't try and push the envelope. Up until 3 years so ago my file server\media server was running Slackware 14.2. I changed to Ubuntu as it doesn't take a whole day to build packages to install something like gitlab on Ubuntu.

Once again you've been a true gent and really patient during this discussion, and after sometime you showed me the way. Even tho I was wrong I feel more educated on the subject.

Cheers
Rob

From memory, there is another kernel setting for something like embedded system that needs to be enbled on the pi's menu-config to build preempt_rt, I have not seen it for a long time as the option is always there now. its ARM specific

Hey rod do you still have access to the code or remember how to build Linuxcnc from within the image builder or install packages that have been built, say I wanted to use the mesa & linuxcnc packages I have built on a RPi5 that follow the current code bases ?
