Yeah, I was looking at those. By the way, how can that wheel do quadrature? I thought there had to be two sets of holes that were spaced 90 degrees out of phase? Or, can you have another optical emitter that is on a non-hole while the first emitter is on a hole?

ps: I see that this unit (below) works with that disk to provide quadrature, so obviously one optical emitter/pickup inside the EM1 module is 90 degrees out of phase of the other. How does one do that on a home made one, that is, if I add another optical pickup to my existing wheel how to I ensure they two are 90 degrees out of phase?

Tom, You would need 5 wires; power, ground, A, B and Index.

Unless you're good you have to make at least one of the pickups adjustable and then set the phase of the signals using a scope.

Just don't put the sensors 180 degrees out of phase. Or you will feel stupid.
