What type of wire is needed to connect steppers to the driver boards? shielded, non shielded ? I am using 18Ga automotive hook up wire for now just to get my machine operational.

Almost anything will work. It doesn't need to be shielded for the stepper motors, but it might help to reduce radiated noise to the other components.

If the wire runs in a drag-chain you might want to consider flexibility. Oil resistance might be important too (coolant can basically be considered the same as oil, I think). In that case consider Ölflex

Rapid sell it by the meter. www.rapidonline.com/drag-chain-cable.

Thank you both for the information, I hope shipping from the UK is reasonable.
I have searched for comparable products in the US and found nothing that is reasonably priced.

We've bought cable from these guys, and the prices shipped to the US was pretty reasonable, for high quality cables.

But the number of choices can be a little daunting.

Where are you based? There has to be a local supplier.

You can even order directly from Lapp here:
lapplimited.lappgroup.com/products/onlin...-classic-fd-810.html

It defaults to 50m, but let me select a different length (10m) and wanted £16 for it. Then I needed to create an account, so stopped experimenting.

You could even try eBay. You quite often see the remainders of full reels being old there.

As an example.

where does the Lapp Group link take you? I ended up at a UK site, but I think that was the system being clever.

I also get the UK site, had a look at their distributors link and it looks like those are all European companies as well.

There must be sources closer to your half of the world than Rapid Electronics, but it might be worth pricing up an order and delivery just because you have already found them.
