I think that 2.8 is some way off.
We are still shaking out bugs. It needs more testing, and you might be the only one with the hardware to test absolute feedback scales.
So, I would encourage you to switch and report any issues.

Ok, I will consider this. If I decide to give it a go, I will replace harddrive and copy my config folder there after fresh install. That way reverting back to 2.7 is easy.

I decided to get another similar PC for this tryout it is even easier to swap in and out than HD. I started a new thread under installing LinuxCNC because it goes slightly off topic.

Hmmm.... I have this problem:
Commanded position G54 Y -35. And machine position at -34.976 there is a 0.024mm difference always. If commanded is Y-100. it is positioned at -99.976 What might cause this?

Modified NC program so that Y-35 position command is Y-35.024 And now actual position is -35.000 where does this +0.024mm come from?? It is same with 2.7.6 with NO_FORCE_HOMING and 2.8.0 pre1 with ABSOLUTE_ENCODER_HOMING = 2

What is the position if you approach from the other side of 100?
What is the basic resolution of your scales? If the number was 0.0254mm I would have guessed 1/1000 in.

I am quite sure position is same regardless of approach direction(I will confirm this tomorrow). Linear scale give resolution of 0.00001mm and Servos have 0.0002 resolution(encoder for servo amplifier only not connected to LinuxCNC). Also I can move to any position with steps of 0.001mm with MPG. If this was a problem with resolution would commanding Y-100.024 result in a position of -100.000 ?

Is this an error in commanded position or actual position?
