Aha!

Homing is a JOINT process, so the HOME_SEQUENCE needs to be in the [JOINT] section not the [AXIS] section.

AHA! Indeed!

It does make sense, now that you put it that way. Funny that I was SURE I had read somewhere that the HOME_SEQUENCE needs to be under the [AXIS] section ...

Thank you

All the HOME stuff belonged in [AXIS] before the joints/axes merge (that's a software merge, at which point the concepts were split)

So depending on whether you read the master / 2.8 docs or the 2.7 docs you will get different information.

if you used Mach3, it is quite easy to successfully do them; the homing operations. But, in Linux one, i am using the 2.7 version, it takes you days to fumble the articles to learn, the instruction is not so clear, you still not succeed easily. Although there are much options for you to choose and operate, it is not good for general newcomers of the CNC world, a very frustrated software especially for self learners.

Have a look at the 2.8 documentation. There did someone a very good job, to explain the setup with some illustrations, point 3 and 4.

linuxcnc.org/docs/2.8/html/config/ini-homing.html

this is a good page which included a colored example picture for illustration. I looked at an older one which doesn't have. So, ... there are a lot of information of this Linuxcnc in web, if you don't get the update one, you will be frustrated a lot. Anyway, i did succeed in doing so before, by swapping the values of home and home offset value to suit the home switch that i use.

What bob are you using. If it is the common China one with a relay on it. Then have you connected 12-24 V power to the terminals near the relay. The inputs won't work without it.
