I don't think that really applies to these. Newer bipolar drives can have better performance and are significantly cheaper to replace than these old uni-polar drives. I'll continue to repair the old ones if I can, but I doubt I'll ever buy another one.

I email AA to determine what the proper way would be to half step with the drive I mentioned earlier; and if just disconnecting the terminal in question would be appropriate, here's a copy of the response:

"I was suggesting this for testing purposes, the best way to do this would be to designate that terminal as open through the controller. I would not know how you would do that with your controller however."

Any ideas on how to "designate" the terminal in LCNC?

If you currently have that pin connected to an output on your Linuxcnc computer and Linuxcnc is commanding that output. You probably only need to find that parallel port output pin in your hal file and comment it out (probably a setp line). I will be honest none of the machines I've worked with use that pin. If yours is using the whole step input it is most likely just a direct connection to 5v or ground and not wasting an output. I have the documents for the drives at work I just can't remember what they say whether the pin needs pulled high or low for full steps. But I know disconnected is half

I looked up the manual today, "Logic 0" for full stepps is pin 8 pulled low (connected to ground). "Logic 1" is pin 8 high, 3.5-24v and it will float there if disconnected.

I hate floating pins.
They always bite when you have no time for trouble. Fix it to either potential.

Maybe I used bad terminology, the drive has an internal pull up, so the pin is either high or pulled low by something you've connected to it.
