But that wouldn't get us to 2.8

I would have referred you to the manual.
www.linuxcnc.org/docs/2.7/html/getting-s..._configuration_files
But that wouldn't get us to 2.8

Dont think so Rod. Just have a look. "Getting Started with LinuxCNC" then "Getting LinuxCNC" All instructions for 2.7.

I'm wondering if Buildbot is down again? It has worked before for me. No it's not.

If you can install 2.7 then upgrading to 2.8 is fairly easy.

Buildbot has been the quickest for me. Just couldn't get the RTPREEMPT version today. Installing the RTAI kernel just so I can go the RTAI version of LinuxCNC.
Happy Days.

Well, Joel. sounds like its a good time to build Linuxcnc from source. I found out the hard way today that our git repository is now on github not on buildbot......
Honestly once you get past the dependencies its really very simple and so easy to try out some of the experimental branches. It only takes a few minutes to compile.

www.linuxcnc.org/testing-stretch-rtpreempt/
I installed debian stretch using the image from the above link, on an Asrock J3455M motherboard.
Note: there is a bug in the version of the stretch live CD used in the above link, which prevents installation if not connected to the internet. You get a "Debootstrap error" "Failed to determine the codename for the release."
Installation works fine if connected to the internet.
