I've already done exactly that, to no avail. Never boots to any install screen. Tried multiple USBs, all of the ports, and a multiple formats (USB/DVD). I'm feeling super close on the building it method mentioned earlier. No more posts, got it.

Nope. Boots right to Ubuntu. Yeah. I mean the other time I did it, according to their site, I don't have to check for them. By writing terminal and writing it to the USB. That way didn't work either.

I don't know how to get to the next step. I've already installed all the files, how do I run it?! haha This question makes me feel weak as a human being. What does "any other bit of software" mean?
I have 4.13.0=38 generic, booting 4.9.47 like I thought I needed results in a kernel panic unable to mount root fs error at grub select. I've tried the options AskUbuntu has to fix that, and none of those work.
Thanks so much for the time you've put into these responses!

So, you have downloaded the vanilla kernel source and the patch file?
Does the kernel source match the patch version? They need to.
Please give the file names of the two files.

Then, what output do you get when you apply the patch? Throughout the instructions you need to stop if there is an error, not continue regardless.

Is this the first time you have attempted to build a kernel ?

Are the filesystem drivers and disk controller drivers modules or included in the kernel ?

If the above are modules is there an initial ramdisk for booting ?

If the above mentioned drivers are modules and there is no initial ramdisk the kernel will have no way of accessing the disk hardware nor will be able the "read" the filesystem.

Are you able to post the grub section for the RT kernel ?

Can you post the RT kernel config, preferably zipped ?
