That does seem odd, I have a few setups running designer and never had to do that.
I have only used Debian Stretch and now Devuan ASCII for designer.
I may have a Mint VM here somewhere, if I do i'll give designer a try on it

I had a spare 5 minutes so I gave your ISO a shot.
No worries installing to a VmWare Fusion VM, works a treat.

I can confirm that is was simple (even for me) It worked a treat used win32diskimager to make the usb. It then booted the pc I put it in as a live install then noticed the install link of the desktop
Then from a terminal I did sudo apt-get update then sudo apt-get dist-upgrade.
Thanks for all the hard work.
Now I would like to edit the autologin. on the previous version I used to edit the /etc.lightdm/lightde.conf file BUT I think it might be a different file to edit in this version?

iso
drive.google.com/file/d/1rL_YJZqJ8sIbucN...KeN/view?usp=sharing
md5
drive.google.com/file/d/1rx9VWub9qvvXxrm...XA9/view?usp=sharing
The image has to be written as a raw image to a usb stick. Either dd in linux or win32diskimager under windows.

It gets better and better. Never even gave it a thought that I didn't need to edit a file. Go to the top of the class and give the nibs out:)

New iso coming up, includes files for qtvcp & designer with qtvcp widgets. This image with boot from grub as an iso image on a fat32 file system. In anyone is interested I can post up some instructions on creating a simple multi boot usb with out needing any third party packages.
in the interim I have a small script that pulls in the required deps.
Copy the lib & create link as per (lib is in qt5.9 directory in a tarball)
github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc/tree/master...ython/qtvcp/designer
Files now available, as usual tested in Vbox
md5: 86 bytes (86 bytes)
drive.google.com/open?id=1jcSdgUkSubGNo8oRt_acU_0sjqCFJZyN
iso: 2.3 GB (2340421632 bytes):
drive.google.com/open?id=17f4FhtF5hayFpumpNHrGFyJ0OQlRb9aT
Enjoy

First off I just want to thank everyone who has contributed time and knowledge to LinuxCNC installs here in the forums. Moving from a Carbide 3D Shapoko and Nomad to building a CNC powered by LinuxCNC has been a goal for the last year. I have the CNC built, just need to get LinuxCNC up and running.
My first Noob mistake was to install Wheezy with RTAI. Since my controller is a Mesa 7i76e, that didn't work. So I decided to go for a fresh install and thought I would go for Mint 19.3 with Stretch 2.9 RT-Preempt. The install didn't go as smoothly as planned (in all honesty, I started over 3 times). But I got it up and running. Then installed the RT kernal and optimized the ethernet settings per the man pages and forum suggestions. Then I went through pncconf and created a setup. When I try and launch the setup I get the following error:
Starting DISPLAY program: axis
USRMOT: ERROR: command timeout
emcMotionInit: emcTrajInit failed
And then LinuxCNC shuts down. I searched the forums for this error, but couldn't find a resolution, so I'm hopping someone here can help. I've attached error report, hal, and ini files.
Any assistance is greatly appreciated. I'm still pretty green on linux.
