That means that the drive is not enabled.
As a first step, just remove any wires to the drive "enable" pins. These are typically a "disable" and when connected to the parport the turn _off_ the drive.
There is no point wiring the enable on a stepper driver, you might as well save the parport pins.

the motor turns free as if it was not connected.

The microstep dip switches were set to NC. My bad, sorry.
Your help forced me to triple check everything. I thought NC = nominal, no microstepping, not "not connected at all".
