All the computers I have worked with are small and have ethernet builtin. I've always been able to get them going so can't advise on NICs
When I googled that intel card before, it had issues. I don't know if they are any good or not for latency. Isuspect being intel, they are OK.

Complete fail with regards ti loading firmware for RTL8168 nic on my Asrock J3355B-ITX board. Tried both on board & PCIe nics, live version has no issue, installer is unable to get IP via dhcp.
Trying the Debian 12.5 Net installer, working fine.
I'm amazed any newbies actually get anywhere, with these nics.

Can confirm netinst 12.5 doesn't install the raspi firmware. If this has been mentioned previously I apologise for being a dill.

Raspi issue has been fixed since 12.2 for sure, i have tested it multiple times, 12.0 had the issue, 12.2 and 12.4 did not. Did not test 12.3 and 12.1 but from what i read it was on 12.1 also.

If the R8168-dkms driver does not install, you must purge it
sudo apt purge R8168-dkms
I have been able to purge it and reboot using another (unbroken) kernel, get the networking sorted again with the R8169 driver and reinstall the dkms driver on the RT kernel.

This is right any net install from 12.1 and above got rid of it but it it seems to be hanging around in the Debian Live installer we use with later versions.

Realised that wasn't in response to my issue with firmware not loading.

I think this post needs to be updated to 2.9.3 to match the website? Also I can't find sha256sum anywhere for the .iso. Fwiw, I get the following:
