I have been able to purge it and reboot using another (unbroken) kernel, get the networking sorted again with the R8169 driver and reinstall the dkms driver on the RT kernel.

 
Realised that wasn't in response to my issue with firmware not loading.

I think this post needs to be updated to 2.9.3 to match the website? Also I can't find sha256sum anywhere for the .iso. Fwiw, I get the following:

5fcbb55e6eabdfd0cf75bc85f881639360d0233933cfe33c1ace50f3cab7b1a2 linuxcnc_2.9.3-amd64.hybrid.iso
