Please download the free Balena Etcher program and use it to create your USB boot image.
That is my method of choice these days and how I tested all of the 2.9.x images before release.

When you get that error, try unplugging the USB, wait 5 seconds, plug it back in, wait 15 seconds then hit retry.
If that fails, try what Rod mentioned, and if that also fails, the USB is faulty or a memory module is in really bad condition and has to be changed as it will fail.

If you already have Debian installed, open a terminal and type:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install linuxcnc-uspace
Done.
That installs LinuxCNC and real time kernel.

You should make a sticky out of ^this^, along with the official md5 debian release dwload. If you already have Debian installed, open a terminal and type:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install linuxcnc-uspace
Done.
That installs LinuxCNC and real time kernel.

2 usb sticks, 3 computers
1 DVD 2 computers
2 virtual machines (KVM ubuntu 20.04, and VMware player windows 11)
all fail to copy files during install
its the preempt kernel variant LinuxCNC_2.9.2-amd64.hybrid.iso that is borked

its not usb device fault, it is messed up iso file, i even burned DVD and it still fails, please prompt the build team to fix this, as steps to install manually on debian 12 only install 2.9.0 pre1When you get that error, try unplugging the USB, wait 5 seconds, plug it back in, wait 15 seconds then hit retry.

As an alternative, you could install Debian 12 and follow the instructions in the docs titled "Getting LinuxCNC" heading 7.1

Maybe for you but many people have installed it without problems.

Haven't noticed the file copy issue but DHCP seems an issue. Currently installing 2.9.2 in a VBox Machine. Have noticed this on a couple of machines that previously had no issue. Using a DHCP server on a pfSense router. Previous Linuxcnc ISO didn't show this behaviour. Basically the install stall at configuring the network, tho there is no issue with running the live version, IP address is fine via DHCP
Have had to go through the "expert text installer" setup and config IP manually. Installation went ok, no issues copying files, one annoying thing is 3 of the 6 launchers of the lower panel are empty when booted to GUI.
All this has been done with the ISO being downloaded a few times, so just not operating on a single download. A mate of mine has also seen this behaviour.
Previously used the a net install image and did a manual install of Linuxcnc.
So I can confirm there has been no issues copying files the auto configuring of the network is an issue during install.
Post installation changing from a static address to one via DHCP works fine.
Seems strange, that's all I can say.
The boards I've tested have been a M73 ThinkStation and an Asrock J3355B-ITX. Haven't tried my Odroid as that has a stable setup, don't have a spare driver for it and it's a pain to access it in the enclosure.

lack of md5/sha checksums for iso images is worrying, as it makes a guessing game whever image downloaded is ok, i found an image on torrents, and tha one installed no problem, but sha256sum is different to official download(tried 3 times) so something is wrong image-size not my end.
when running sha256/md5 sums provided on the image the one downloaded from linuxcnc.org consistently returns 4 errors... go figure
funny thing is, image downloaded this morning works fine and sha256sum matches the one i got off torrents yesterday....
