You can drive the VFD directly with RS485 via a USB to RS485 adapter without bothering with Ethercat. Worked perfectly for me.
I think if you wanted to use Ethercat to drive a VFD, you would use a Ethercat compatible VFD.
There is a Omron MX2 driver included. but I have never used it.
Ok, that is what I'm currently using and it works well, I thought maybe it would make more sense to run the VFD through Beckhoff thus all connections to the PC would be EtherCAT. I'll probably continue with USB.
