There is a small patch to allwow the kernel to make a sysfs entry that Linuxcnc and some other programs use to determine if the kernel is a realtime kernel.

Installing NoMachine Remote Desktop - Package installer issues

Category: Computers and Hardware

You failed to read the installation instructions on the website.

sudo dpkg -i nomachine_8.16.1_1_amd64.deb

Of course changing the package name.

For just editing files this is way over kill.
Install Putty on the windows machine.
Login into the Linuxcnc machine via ssh
sudo apt install mc (it may already be installed)
Browse the filesystem
F4 will open the editor, in asked choose mcedit.
F10 closes and saves the file.
Yeah yeah yeah it looks like Norton Commander, but it is a very powerful tool. Eevn on a full desktop install I still use it.

Thanks, Tommy! I took a quick look and I think the configs make sense for what I have. I'll give it a shot.

@Aciera -

I tried to use the python comp, but I'm getting an error. Probably related to my installation rather than your file.

lathe@lathe:~$ halcmd loadusr /home/lathe/linuxcnc/configs/LATHE_REV1.713/python/unhome_comp.py
lathe@lathe:~$ /usr/bin/env: ‘python3\r’: No such file or directory
/usr/bin/env: use -[v]S to pass options in shebang lines

Any ideas?

LinuxCNC 32 BITS

Category: General LinuxCNC Questions

Thank you so much!. My netbook, as already mentioned, has 2 gigabytes of ram and an SD, I don't know if a cable with a parallel port, via USB, that is functional to work directly with the GSK 980 TDb will be valid, which board do they use to connect to the lathe, after the parallel port?. It shouldn't be very difficult, since the cable of said lathe is a vga type, but with only 3 very thin cables, I think I read in your manual that that little lathe is 32 bits... Thank you very much again! Very kind for your patience with me.... Congratulations!...

Installing NoMachine Remote Desktop - Package installer issues

Category: Computers and Hardware

Thank you so much. I did have a typo. I am getting a different error now that i think ill take back to their forum.
james@CNCPC:~/Downloads$ sudo apt install ./nomachine_8.15.3_1_amd64 [sudo] password for james: Reading package lists... Done E: Unsupported file ./nomachine_8.15.3_1_amd64 given on commandline

I am interested in the solution you recommended but I think installing all of that and getting them to talk to each other seems a little out of my league unless there's super easy to follow instructions somewhere HAHA.

Configure a non-motorized axis with a linear scale (DRO mode) - Solved

Category: Advanced Configuration

Digging in a bit more, I think I understand what's happening.

In the AXIS source code, the "Touch Off" dialog issues a G10 L20 via the MDI, for example G10 L20 P1 Z1.0 to touch off Z in WCS 1 to 1.0

I haven't yet gone digging into the G-Code parser part of LinuxCNC yet, but I imagine it uses the joint's COMMANDED position, not the ACTUAL position.  With my non-motorized axis, the commanded position is 0, even if the actual position changes via the magnetic scale.

Using the MDI manually, I can get the effect I'm looking for by applying the ACTUAL position plus the desired touchoff offset to the G10 L20 command.

So I see two potential approaches...
  • dig into the G-Code parser, extend G10 L20 so it can be told to use the actual position instead of the commanded
  • modify AXIS (or whatever GUI) so it applies the actual position plus whatever manual offset is entered by the user
I found a post from a few years ago that's at least in the same ballpark... but no real solution on offer.  It sounds like Probe Basic might do something like what I want out of the box though.

No motion LinuxCNC Debian 12 Bookworm PREEMPT-RT ISO, same config works on 2.8

Category: General LinuxCNC Questions

I've got a 3 axis mill that is running Linux 2.8 on a 32-bit Debian install using a Mesa 6i25 / 7i76 combo.

I've installed LinuxCNC 2.9.4 on a new hard drive from the LinuxCNC Debian 12 Bookworm PREEMPT-RT ISO and have copied the config files from the 2.8 install.  LinuxCNC 2.9 starts using those config files without any issue and I've got comms with the Mesa cards but I can't move any of the axes (this also means I can't home the machine so anything that requires homing can't be done/tested).

It's probably something fairly simple perhaps with some config requirement change from 2.8 to 2.9 but I've read the documentation and nothing noted in there applies to my setup.

Any ideas on how I can go about diagnosing this issue?  I've made no hardware changes to the machine and swapping the 2.8 hard drive back in has everything working properly.

PWM with a 7i96 and 7i85

Category: General LinuxCNC Questions

I have a 7i85 and I've been using this firmware (without using pwm) for quite a while. The three encoders are on the 7i85. Not certain how it worked but it did.

I would appreciate a new version with PWM when you get the time. (I do need the index-enable for this config.)
I use 7i92 PWM for my router laser so I should be ok if the pin gets exposed.

@ elovalvo Thanks for your work on this. I am trying to stay within RPI OS and compiling my own kernel. Can you tell me why I still have to patch the kernel, even though RT_PREEMPT is supposed to be a part of the mainstream kernel now? I am using the latest 6.6.74.

Probe Basic V.5 - kein Feedregler mehr? Solved

Category: Deutsch

Wisst Ihr vielleicht etwas dazu?

PWM with a 7i96 and 7i85

Category: General LinuxCNC Questions

First, it Looks like that configuration is for a 7I85S rather than 7I85
and second it look like custom firmware that has a mistake
(a PWM module instantiated but no pins brought out)

A configuration including a PWMgen should have a P in the name
I can make a proper configuration in a day or so if you wish

Do you have a 7I85 or 7I85S?

Onshape CAM Studio was announced last Friday with basic 2-1/2D and 3D available now and more advanced 3D to 5th axis available in the future with an additional paid fee.

Standard CAM Studio is free for those on the Professional or higher tiers, so you'll need to fork over $2,500 per year to get access to it. Enterprise Educational users may get access to it after some period of time. Or not.

PWM with a 7i96 and 7i85

Category: General LinuxCNC Questions

I'm running a 7i96 with a 7i85 for my lathe(steppers and linear encoders) using 7i96_7i85ssdid.bit I have been using LCNC pwmgen and I'd like to switch to the Mesa pwmgen before I spend time tuning the spindle VFD pid further. (I use the stepgen.00.index-enable pin for homing)

I loadrt [HM2](DRIVER) board_ip=[HM2](ADDRESS) config="num_encoders=3 num_pwmgens=1 num_stepgens=4 sserial_port_0=00xxxx" I'm using TB3 ENC 0, ENC 1, ENC2 on the 7i85 and TB1 STEP 0, STEP 1, STEP 2, STEP 3 on the 7i96.This all works with the LCNC pwmgen driving ssr.00.out-02.

I added the mesa pwmgen and I can run the mesa pwmgen in parallel but I can't find the pwmgen signal coming out the Mesa board.
I was expecting to see the PWM output on the TB2 STEP4 (TB2-02, TP2-03) connector but I do not see a PWM gen signal?

7i96_7i85ssdid.pin from readhmid reports there is a PWM module in the firmware (and I can see the pwmgen pins in HALMeter and HALShow) but I can't figure out the pwm signal connector?

LCNCpins.txt doesn't show the PWM assignment either?

LatheSpindle.hal has my relevant HAL connections.

Any help would be appreciated.

Installing NoMachine Remote Desktop - Package installer issues

Category: Computers and Hardware

It seems like you made a typo, try to go first to the directory:
cd ~/Downloads
and then enter:
sudo apt install ./nomachine and press TAB so it will complete it automatically to nomachine_8.16.1_1_amd64.deb and press enter

Or just open the folder in the window manager and dubbel click the file

I'm using Sunshine as host on the LinuxCNC PC and Moonlight-qt as client, this works pretty well.
github.com/LizardByte/Sunshine/releases
github.com/moonlight-stream/moonlight-qt/releases/tag/v6.1.0

On the Windows PC I use WinSCP to easily transfer files
