Help Wiring 7I96S To Teknic Servos

Category: Driver Boards

MESA   TECHNICS
STEP+  A+
STEP-   A-
DIR+    B+
DIR-     B-

The Enable I would probably wire:

All axis ENA- to 5V GND
All axis ENA+ to 7I96S OUT0-
7I96 OUT0+ to +5V

This allows OUT0 to enable all drives in parallel.

HLFB wiring depends on whether they are normally on or normally off
and how the output is programmed (I am assuming the most common
usage of this output is as a drive fault signal)

My DMM was reading too high, got the battery changed and now all good.

I had one of those, an Uni-T smaller size piece of cr@p, it got retired, violently, as it does not show the battery is low, yet wasted me half an hour of headscratching as to why am i getting 53VAC on a regulated 12V rail!!!

Making 3rd party Mesa daughter card: what are the voltage levels?

Category: Driver Boards

7I96 P1 voltage levels are basically 3.3V though
you can get 5V output swing using open drain
output mode. (all I/O have 4.7K pullups to 5V)
Daughtercard design need to consider that all
P1 I/O will be high at startup because of these pullups

All I/O pins are 5V tolerant.
Input thresholds are LVTTL so approximately 1.5V

Maximum input voltage is +7V
Minimum input voltage is -0.5V
Maximum source/sink current is 16 mA
(more negative than -0.5V without current limiting
will damage the input clamp diodes = 10 mA Max)

Also note that you can get power for your daughtercard
via P1

@PCW Yes, I understand now.

My DMM was reading too high, got the battery changed and now all good. The problem was I was setting the voltage using the DMM rather than the display of the regulated PS. After battery change, the reading of the DMM matches the reading on the display of the PS.

Thanks for all your help!

Making 3rd party Mesa daughter card: what are the voltage levels?

Category: Driver Boards

Like many of us, apparently, I ran out of IO's on my Mesa 7i96s as my CNC project got bigger. I'm in EU (Czech Republic) and I cannot find daughter card in nearby eshops, that is in stock and doesn't cost arm, leg and/or kidney. I'm cheeky enough to think that I can wire a simple IO card by myself.

The question is: what are the voltage levels of the IOs on the IDC26 connector? I see someone connecting a parallel BOB directly, so is it 5V, or 3.3V since it is wired to the FPGA?

Thanks for info,
Martin

PS: If everything goes well with prototyping, I will make a custom PCB. Anyone else interested?

Can someone direct me to where I find how to wire this creature?

I am using break-out-board, and BT-30 power head

Need more detail.

Post a copy of the user manual please, as well as your BOB manual.  If you're using a Mesa card, please identify it and how you've connected your BOB.

Help Wiring 7I96S To Teknic Servos

Category: Driver Boards

Hello,

I am not the worlds best at wiring things and would appreciate some help so that I do not 'let the smoke out'.

Here is the connector from the teknic servo (from the manual)

teknic.com/files/downloads/clearpath_user_manual.pdf

www.mesanet.com/pdf/parallel/7i96sman.pdf

Can someone please tell me what pins on the teknic control cable go to which slot on the 7I96S /TB1 connector?
Teknic
teknic pin 1 --> mesa TB1 pin ?
teknic pin 2  -->  mesa TB1 pin ?
teknic pin 3 -->  mesa TB1 pin ?
teknic pin 4 -->  mesa TB1 pin ?
teknic pin 5 -->  mesa TB1 pin ?
teknic pin 6 -->  mesa TB1 pin ?
teknic pin 7 -->  mesa TB1 pin ?
teknic pin 8 -->  mesa TB1 pin ?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Skinny wires or current limit too low?

You can access the card, run mesaflash etc on a standard shared network.
What you cannot do is run LinuxCNC without a dedicated Ethernet connection.

@PCW, I'm using a regulated desktop ps for this test, so I bumped up the voltage to 5.2 v. It's drawing 536 ma, does that sound about right? So now the light goes off at 5.2v. I had it at 5v and it didn't work. The spec say 4.75v to 5.25V. I wonder if my dvm is not calibrated well.

BTW, still connected via a router to the PC. And now MesaCT finds the board.

The real time Ethernet connection cannot be shared.

For general network access, the typical solution is to add a WIFI or Ethernet
USB dongle (or Ethernet card if you have PCI/PCIE slots)

I would never use a servo motor as a direct spindle unless it's designed to do so. What you show probably has standard grade electric motor bearings. A proper spindle has angular contact bearings designed to take axial and radial loads.
Also, it would be hard to control runout on anything mounted to the shaft for tool holding. I think pocket NC had something along those lines but I don't have experience with them. Always thought of that spindle to be a poor design. Probably fine if you're doing wax or hd foam models.

Remora - ethernet NVEM / EC300 / EC500 cnc board

Category: Computers and Hardware

Just to be sure that I didn't make any wiring mistakes. Red = gnd, yellow = clk, white = dio, black = 3.3v (not needed for flashing). The board is blasted with 24v.
