Real-time kerel not detected on patched 6.12

Category: General LinuxCNC Questions

I just installed linuxcnc on my desktop PC  using the Debian trixie alpha1 ISO on an AMD64 PC
Linuxcnc 2.3 is included in the trixie repositories
It installed fine and brought in the PREEMPT_RT kernel.
Linuxcnc started Using POSIX realtime with no further action

So it looks like its a Raspberry Pi thing which is resolved by applying the kernel patches. I'll try tonight

Linuxcnc is way way better than Mach3

Solved - LinuxCNC does not work with new Delta ASDA-A2 drive

Category: General LinuxCNC Questions

M drives are Can bus. They can be switched to analogue or pulse though. Most likely it is defaulted to Can bus operation.

Real-time kerel not detected on patched 6.12

Category: General LinuxCNC Questions

Yeah a bit confusing indeed, actually I wasn't aware that these patches are available, at the beginning of 6.12 they weren't. One of them is indeed to add support for arm and also one to add the realtime indicator.

Then for now still applying those patches seems to be the best way to go

You can impove latency by switching the CPU governor to performance.

You should open your PC and physically remove as much hardware as you can.

Hardware usually adds to latency.

Also, while I have never used Mach 3 (when I triedit on Windows 7, 32-bit it just crashe the PC), it is porbably more user-friendly than than LinuxCNC.
Mach 3 is commercial software.

Or at least, it was.
Mach 3 is pretty much obsolete now.

Windows XP 32-bit is SUPER old-school.

However, most POS software runs on Windows 98!!!!!
Windows 7 is SO much faster than Windows 10; it is unbelievable.
It also does not really collect telemetry.

Real-time kerel not detected on patched 6.12

Category: General LinuxCNC Questions

Yeah I know that, but a good tip anyhow, I built my first kernel on a 486......pre 2000 lol

Having a look at the RT patches for 6.12 there's a bit of extra stuff for arm/arm64, the patch code you've referenced is included is included as well.

ATM I'm running thru rod's image builder to see if it all comes good.

Seems like "real time" being included in the mainline kernel, as reported by tech blogs isn't the full story, seems there is some patching required, otherwise I guess the patches wouldn't be up.

I feel it's getting a bit confuddling when you start to dig deeper and actually build a kernel.

Sorry to keep banging on about this.

It's kind of doubly confusing at my end, as I'm not really sure this whole cnc thing is for me.

Real-time kerel not detected on patched 6.12

ARM64 but the same applies for AMD64

Tip, in menuconfig press the "/" key and you can search for the option you need, to see the location, but also the dependings.

Edit: I think you're right about the kconfig edit to add rt support for arm, probably I used an old config as template where the ARCH_SUPPORTS_RT=y was already in. Still "Expert=y" also needs to be selected

They may not be exactly the same in every aspect, but when they are cia402 devices they do have the same (subset of) pdo numbers and functions.

That xml file is an ESI file, ethercat slave information. Linuxcnc doesn't use it. The same information can be read from the slave, try ethercat sdos and ethercat pdos. That will list most of what's in that file. You need to join the ethercat technology group to get access to documents describing the esi file. For an explanation of sdos and pdos of your drive, the manual of course.

I see a lot of talk regarding enabling expert, that’s a sub menu with quite a few options, non relating to enabling a fully preemptible kernel.
The mod to the kconfig is a switch, as far as I can see, that the platform is RT capable.

As you can see in my previous post, I built the kernel without additional patches besides the one that adds the rt indicator and didn't need to edit the kconfig.

Thank you so much to FernV for this. It is just what I was looking for and the old links from the LinuxCNC manual were dead.

Two comments though, from this extremely inexpert user.
The first is that in my version of UbuntuStudio 24.04 with Kde both the language-specs and the styles directories are in /usr/share/libgedit-gtksourceview-300/
The second is that after I put Gcode.xml into the styles directory, highlighting did not work until I renamed Gcode.xml to ngc.xml
Now it  works great!
thanks, Jonathan

That was a perfectly acceptable answer to me.

I'm just going through the process of eliminating possibilities before I assume my board is complete toast.

Thanks

I was going to suggest probe basic but I've not been in that project for a few years now.

I personally go for function over form when it comes to CNC machines.

You could roll your own with the Flex GUI.

Has anyone tried this module out? Would be super useful and very neat, not to expensive aswell. Documentation seems very limited i tried to contact them but no answer yet. Should not be hard to write programs for such simple io boards, right?
