I have the same problem.
First, it couldn't find common.h. Then I added the file from ethercat-master source.
Now I get the error 

-- Generating done
CMake Generate step failed.  Build files cannot be regenerated correctly.

Now I'm wondering, is this the right way to go, or does this project have to be used?

I use RIP installation.
If I debug files in the /linuxcnc/src folder, I just need to be in the /linuxcnc/src folder and type $ make. Then only what I edited is compiled.

If I debug files in the /linuxcnc/lib folder, I am in the /linuxcnc/src folder and type $ make, nothing happens.
I have to type $ make -B, but it takes a long time.

How should I debug the file:
/linuxcnc/lib/python/gladevcp/builtin-panels/gtk_little_probe/gtk_little_probe.py
?

Because I am using an antique desktop (Dell Optiplex 960) and WiFi, I am stranded at linuxCNC 2.7.15.  I have struggled to get decent network speed.  Only some USB WiFi adapters work native to 2.7.15.  (Trying to install drivers for adapters with other chipsets was more effort than it was worth.)  The SMC EZ Connect works, but it is only 802.11g and because there is a range and refrigerator in line of WiFi to router, I was limited to about 16 Mbps.

I decided to take a walk on the wild side and bought a BrosTrend Linux USB WiFi Adapter AC1200 for Ubuntu Kali Mint Debian Kubuntu Mate Zorin PureOS Raspberry Pi Windows etc. Linux Compatible WiFi Adapter Wireless Dual Band 5GHz 867Mbps + 2.4GHz 300Mbps.  Once I followed the instructions at linux.brostrend.com/ I was able to install the drivers for what is apparently the AC1L family and now I get 240 Mbps. Customer support was necessary to figure out which driver family was required during driver installation.   Curiously, plugging the adapter into the front USB ports gave me many times the rate as rear USB ports.

I found encoder signals and attached z encoder linuxcnc reads nice with encoder scale -400, ballscrew is 5mm per revolution and encoders are 500 lines. now I have to connect the others and find a way to enable the drivers because they are all in the box, not each one individually.

I updated the firmware for 7i96s+7i77, I had to make a basic configuration on 7i92+7i77, then changed to ini 7i96s, does this work ok, the first thing I want is to attach encoders, however in hal it says 0 pwm generators if I change them to 6 I can't start linuxcnc.

Yes, I helped Joco get this working on real hardware when he did the first development. and it is very good. Built like a touch screen gui should be! 

There is a halui pin halui.mode.manual  that can do this and halui.mode.teleop will enable jogging. I have used these with pendants. 

Hi All, I want to tackle a project that I started about 6 years ago and never got round to. 
Mi Avon Mill with Anilam GXM contro        l served me well until one day it did'nt. First the one servo driver failed. The machine uses Baldor (i think) DC servo motors with tacho and encoder feedback. I replaced the drive and the machine was running OK. At some point I re-soldered some of the Anilam control cards, as the machine was acting unpredictably and I suspected dry joints. I decided it was no longer useable when the Z-axis had a runaway and crashed a tool into my manual tool setter. (coming to think of it, this could also have been an encoder problem)
I bought a Mesa 5i25 Superport and a Mesa 7i77D card for it, but that is where I got stuck. 
I now started up an old Dell Core 2 Duo machine with 4GB ram and a 240GB SSD for the retrofit, and installed LinuxCNC 2.9.4
My plan is to first get the Dell and Mesa cards running on the bench, Maybe toggle a output and read a handwheel or switch. Then do the transplant and get things working from there. If possible, I want to use the existing electrics cabinet and just connect to the two ribbon cables connecting the Anilam with the electrical cabinet. I will start with the existing drives, and upgrade to AC drives and motors when budget allows.
