My file exceeds that limit. It's 1.5mb,

This time I didn't use winrar, I just right clicked and did send to compressed zip folder. Hope this works for your.

If not, give me a website that I can upload it to for you to download.

Hi

The link is OK, I downloaded and opened the zip

Unfortunately dxf2gcode does not like something in the dxf file and throws several errors so I am unable to progress further.

I assume you need one part per dxf file with no title block or text or anything else but the profile for simple dxf to g code processors to work. The shapes are quite simple iirc, why not just hand write the code?

The new file loads into SheetCAM OK, but I don't really understand it. (Unless the faulty, overlapping contour which it complains about is the front outline?

Despite being different colours, the outlines are all in the same DXF layer, it would be much easier if the internal and external contours were in different layers.

I think downloading SheetCAM would be a good solution for you.

I can write in G-Code, but that would take longer than re-drawing it and converting it to G-Code, but correct me if I am wrong.

I got this file from someone else that used Rhino3D to draw it. DIYLILCNC.org is their website.

It didn't make sense to me because the layers were weird in AutoCAD.

I guess I will re-draw it and then convert it instead of writing it in G-Code directly because it will be faster if I just redraw it and then convert it, but correct me if I am wrong.

Also when getting a SATA hard drive is it best to get one that is 2MB cache or 8MB buffer cache?

With 7200 RPM is it better to get one with 150MBps (SATA I) or 300MBps (SATA II) speeds?

Will both work with LinuxCNC?

I found so many drives on ebay and do not know what brand to get. I think getting NEW drives rather than refurbished or used drives is also a good choice.

I don't know if Western Digital is the best brand, it's just that I had good experience with a WD brand new drive before but here are a couple I found:

New:
www.ebay.com/itm/New-40GB-7200RPM-8MB-Ca...&hash=item1c210d9752

Used:
www.ebay.com/itm/Western-Digital-WD400JD...&hash=item4845b4788f
www.ebay.com/itm/WESTERN-DIGITAL-CAVIAR-...&hash=item4603e41d5a
www.ebay.com/itm/Western-Digital-Caviar-...&hash=item2ebf1eb784

Cannot decide which one to get based up reliability and usability. Help me.
I would get the brand new one, but it has 150 MBps speeds.
The WD all have 300MBps speeds, but all are used.\
All drives have 8mb cache. And I think all have equivalent latency specifications with a seek time average of 8.9 ms

Thanks.

My preference is for one with 0 rpm, such as an SSD.
But I see you are looking at the lower end of the budget range.

It basically doesn't matter. The G-code runs from memory, so disc performance is not terribly relevant.

Yup, I'm on a very tight budget.
I guess I will just be getting the brand new hard drive for the low price. I hope 150MBps compared to 300MBps is sufficient.
Doesn't EMC2 require read speeds?

Also a usb keyboard and mouse. Might go wireless as well.

Hmm thinking about getting an SSD, but a few important questions I have:

I plan on doing a dual boot setup, and wanted to ask: Does this affect performance for EMC2 and/or latency?

As far as the SSD goes, can I partition that drive so that I can make a Dual boot set-up?

Can windows and linux run at the same time, or is it only 1 at a time? Just curious.

Im planning to buy a usb wired mouse with keyboard, but can also get wireless, however my budget for that is low and idk how well a wireless would perform at that budget. Anyone here using a wireless setup?

I found microsoft wireless 800 (scroll wheel high resolution might be a problem based on reviews)
Also found Logitech wireless 260 (mouse can break and double click when single clicking based on reviews)

I can get one of those setups, or I can get a full wired mouse and never worry about reliability. Im afraid of lag in wireless where I might need to press emergency stop in software.

Ive heard lag with the logitech, dont remember about what I read about the microsoft mouse. Hard decision to make.
