Right, but qtypyvcp uses VTK that needs a newer OpenGL version
so Axis runs fine on older PCs but qtypyvcp needs newer hardware

In that case, i have not noticed, i use Axis GUI, and it works on PC's and Laptops up to 15 years old.
Or maybe i did ! Hmmm, when i test computers i start axis gui and move the logo on the view, zoom in and out, and check how quick it responds. Any lag and i do not use that computer for machines.
That might be it.
Thank you PCW and Todd.

I am aware of that, was not aware that VTK is directly or indirectly related to OpenGL.
Axis uses OpenGL and will not work without it.
Did not know that and never noticed as i use Axis gui.One caution about older PCs is that they may not be compatible with VTK
as the on board graphic hardware does not support the OpenGL features needed
Thank you.

If you only need one, don't need guaranteed supply, and don't want a touch-screen:
www.ebay.ch/itm/Rm-One-214-Core-i3-3240-...4:g:Eu4AAOSwieleV8pV
I have one as my LinuxCNC test machine. Latency is <7000 preempt-rt and <5000 RTAI. The parallel port works with LinuxCNC and it has two internal PCI slots.
Mine is permanently set up with a 5i25 + 7i76 in the PCI, a PCI parport card and a 7i43 on the onboard parallel port and a 7i80DB on the ethernet port.

I am writing from Europe (more specifically, Switzerland), as such HW availability can easily become a pain in the neck.

I join the discussion with a similar question.
At the moment i'm running my 3d printer through the parallel port on an old HP P4 workstation. All good, but it started showing black screens ( mid print, after 24 hours of printing ) and i crashed the machine 2 times due to the UI freezing in jog mode.
So it's time to change it. At home i have a Pentium D pc that has very good latency numbers (but no parport, not an issue because i just ordered a mesa 7i96), but i'm tired of old, hot, constantly swapping PCs. So i was thinking about removing the old motherboard / cpu / disk from this pentium D machine and replacing everything with something like this:
www.amazon.it/gp/product/B079GHR8L9/ref=...A14O09FCGSM9B3&psc=1
Does anybody have any experience with this cpu? The price is incredibly low ( i'd get mobo with cpu, ram and ssd for less than 130€), it's fanless, 10W instead of 95... I just need someone to tell me if it could work with linuxcnc uspace (i'm currently migrating to 2.8, and i'll adapt my configuration to the mesa board as soon as i get it).

It looks good.
I use a J3355B with a 2 Core Celeron with a 2.0GHz base freq burst is 2.5GHz
The J4105M has a 4 Core Celeron with a 1.5GHz base freq burst is 2.5GHz
Hers a search on the forums regarding the J4105

I already search a little on the forum, this in particular doesn't sound very promising forum.linuxcnc.org/18-computer/34992-mot...mesa-7i80hd?start=20

The Mint ISO's I'm working on use 4.16.12-rt5-kona-rt
It's a bit hard to diagnose with the comment "my graphics are total crap".
Using that kernel with on T530 Thinkpad I can get 1600x900 with a NVIDIA Corporation GF108M [NVS 5400M]
I'm going to spin up a new ISO shortly I'll test on my J3355B and see how it goes, may be a indication on how it goes with your board.

The graphic problems are in RTAI version, not the Kona-RT version.
RTAI on some hardware has some issues, on some it works happily.

I am using that same kernel/mint/ on several (over 10 right now) PC's and laptops and a HP tablet PC, all of them work perfectly. The Mint ISO's I'm working on use 4.16.12-rt5-kona-rt

Ok, so it should work fine with stretch / preemptRT.
Do you have a better alternative? Otherwise I might order that today or tomorrow.
I already have case and psu, so I just have to order that board, some ram and an ssd (you can find 120GB crucial ssd's for lesse than 30 euro 0.0).

I received the motherboard today!
On a fresh linuxcnc stretch installation the graphic was indeed terrible (stuck on 800x600).
I updated the kernel through synaptic to 4.19 rt (stretch-backport).
Straight away i booted with 1080p resolution.
I still have a few issues though, i get quite high latency spikes related to graphic load (eg: when resizing a browser window) up to 170'000 ns.
Any idea? It's probably a driver issue, you can see that the gpu isn't performing how it should also when scrolling the browser.
