Hi Rod,
I found this refurbished PC, not expensive, but it may not be a Celeron.
www.alpha-shop.nl/hp-dc7900-core2duo-250gb-4gb.html
This was the cheapest, though.
Regards,
Jack.

I've tried out a few of that vintage HP machines, and they did not work particularly well latency wise. They have very basic bios settings and you can not disable all of power saving features needed to get good stable latency scores. They might be ok using Mesa hardware, but software stepping is mostly out the question.

Hi Rod, Thank you very much! That helps a lot!
You are so extremely helpful!

I got some indicator lights working, like "x and z is homed" and "E-stop is active".

The simple code:
# Home
loadrt and2 count=4
addf and2.3 servo-thread

# HALUI signals
net x-is-homed <= halui.joint.0.is-homed
net z-is-homed <= halui.joint.2.is-homed
net x-is-homed => and2.3.in0
net z-is-homed => and2.3.in1
net is-homed <= and2.3.out
# T5.17 = OUTUT8
net is-homed => hm2_7i76e.0.7i76.0.0.output-08

# ESTOP
net estop-activated <= halui.estop.is-activated
net estop-activated => hm2_7i76e.0.7i76.0.0.output-09

But I wonder what useful knobs and indicators could be for the latte.
I've got:
- on/off switch (main power)
- estop knob (not yet in the hal code)
- Two MPGs
- Rotary switch, same as Rod's, for step size per click of the MPG: 1.0 / 0.1 / 0.01 / 0.0
- indicator homed (green)
- indicator estop active (red)
- a knob for the spindle speed (override or just direct to the motor driver, I need to figure, or select it with a switch)
- a knob for spindle rev / on / fwd (may do that later on in software)

Note the screen is not a touch screen, so physical buttons are preferred.

But what is handy to have on a lathe?
Maybe somebody knows?
Pictures of front panels may also help... If I know what it means :-)

Note I'm not the one who are going to use it at first, but just to make it working with the help the friendly people over here!
Team work, let's say!

And I saw these lights, which may be nice to mount on it:
www.aliexpress.com/item/LED-Desk-Lamp-wi...ook/32771576320.html

Could that be handy?
The initial user is 65+, so good light is a plus, I think... :-)

I'm going to my friends over there, and am not able to read the poit here and answer tonight.
But I will jump in tomorrow, again.
Thank you all in advance!!!!

Best regards,
Jack.

Looking at your list of controls, you seem to have it pretty well covered. Perhaps a Home all Button?

Hi Rod,
I thought about it, but don't know where a lathe will home. It could be a dangerous button, if pressed inadvertently, while a work piece is in the machine, I don't know.
I could be wrong, but isn't it something that possibly needs to be done only once, before start?
Regards,
Jack.

Homeing in Lathe is always far away from the chuck.

You might want a coolant on/off/auto three-position switch too (Auto means that it is controlled by G-code, the other positions are overrides). Similarly for the spindle brake if one is fitted.

The HP Compaq DC9700 is still running fine, for a week, without any errors.
I guess I'm lucky with it (I actually got two of these).

Hi Tecno, homing is working.
I will combine the switch with the end switch on that side, as it is a bit cumbersome to mount many switches.

Good that you got it working.

On my lathe I only have 1 switch on each axis and use a rail with adjustable positions to activate the switch with roller top.
Z-axis switch is mounted on carriage and nocks are fixed, on X axis switch is fixed and rail with nocks is moving.
