If I remember correct it happened after i did a synaptic upgrade 14.1.18
Haven't done such upgrade weeks before, maybe last time around Christmas but don't know anymore. Sorry. And it was always running perfect.

The 2018 January 14 update went from 1:2.8.0~pre1.3405.ge10c52ea6 to 1:2.8.0~pre1.3520.g0a096c965, which is a pretty large jump that includes the commit Rene pointed out. So that's valuable debugging, thanks.

I have a 7i73 and I have an LCD. But I am not expecting to be home very much until mid-February. (I am currently north of the Arctic circle)

I am currently trying to get an LCD to work at all so that I have a way to test the software. I have removed the 7i73 from my milling machine, but I am not sure that the LCD I have ever worked.
I have another to try, and I suspect that, somewhere, I might even have another still with the right cable, but can't find it.

AFAIK the driver change the broke the 7I73 is the one that allows direct parameter access.
As a side effect this sets all parameters to 0. This is likely to cause all kinds of troubles with
Mesa sserial cards
I think any driver change that touches sserial parameters without a
specific user request should be enabled by a flag (maybe per channel)

One general problem with lcd i found is the brightness voltage. It is often needed slightly negative. That's why i do not use the 7i73 pin but have a icl7660 generate -5v and use a simple poti.

I think this is probable, but needs to be provedAFAIK the driver change the broke the 7I73 is the one that allows direct parameter access.
It really shouldn't. The HAL parameters should take the values read from the device, as before. As a side effect this sets all parameters to 0.

Pretty sure this has been proven ( backing out to before that change fixed the LCD issue )
The setting parameters to 0 is something suggested by rene-dev on IRC (he seemed to think this happens )
But in general at least for Mesa sserial devices, parameters are very much like CANOpen SDO objects
( Setup Data Objects ) nothing that should be set live (as opposed to PDO = Process Data Oblects ) which are
expected to be controlled live
