First, i apologize if this has been answered before. i could not find a solution. I am working through the set up of my machine and I am trying to disable the WiCD network manager using the sticky for this. When i input "apt-get install network-manager network-manager-gnome" in the terminal i get:

E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock-frontend - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to acquire the dpkg frontend lock (/var/lib/dpkg/lock-frontend), are you root?

I'm trying to figure out how to give permission for this folder. Any help is appreciated!

Should be :
sudo apt-get install network-manager network-manager-gnome
And do not mess with the permissions.

Thanks, i was trying to hurry to get back in here. I had figured out the issue that i didn't have the "sudo". I have since worked through the:

====Network setup for mesa cards: ======
- left click on the network manager on the bottom right side or upper right side where the clock and volume is.
- choose "edit connections"
- double click on the network you want to edit ( usually "wired connection X")
- click on the "IPv4 settings" tab
- choose "manual" on the "method" drop down menu
- click on "add"
- write the address as 10.10.10.11
- never use 10.10.10.1 or 10.10.10.10 for the above
- netmask should be left as is ( usually 8 )
- gateway should always be 10.10.10.1
- additional DNS servers should be 10.10.10.1

From here I'm stuck...do I only imput info on the IPv4 tab? When I close out and click on connection information it says that there are "no valid active connections found".

Save, close, left click on the network manager and click on the "wired connection X", it should take about 3 seconds to reconnect.
Now open a terminal and do Ping 10.10.10.10, you should get normal reply form the Mesa card. If you do not get a reply, double check your settings.
To check the Mesa card configuration, in terminal enter :
mesaflash --device 7i76e --addr 10.10.10.10 --readhmid

Did you remove the WiCD ?
It should be removed/uninstalled.

I was trying to upload some pictures but everything is exceeding the limits of the file size. But yes I followed the walk-through that was posted but cannot get it to talk to the card via the ethernet cable.

I have the board powered with 24v and if it's any indication I have 2 solid yellow lights on.

OK that look s OK setup wise

Is the 7I76E connected, powered and set to 10.10.10.10 IP address?
If so you should be able to ping the 7I76E card

The report shows the link as down, is the "automatically connect" checkbox
checked in the general tab of the network manager?
