@Rod: I got up extra - LCNC has been running for 10.5 hours now and is "milling" away. No problem so far.

@PCW: We had already discussed and improved here: forum.linuxcnc.org/27-driver-boards/4809...7i96s?start=0#263250
Let me wait until morning. Thanks a lot!

Peter

What hardware?

What are the ping times?

(These give a clue if the basic networking options are setup correctly
or if management functions in the BIOS like AMT are interfering)

Ping timese were about 0.1 He knows what he's doing with Mesa cards. He's got an old i5 All in one
He had good results compiling the OEM realtek driver without the 6.1 kernel but then it errored.
Then with my kernel he thought it was good but it errored after 30 minutes.

I've ordered an Odroid N2+ PC and have pretty much worked out how to compile the kernel to an image and how to patch it with PREEMPT_RT
All you have to do is place the patch under userpatches in the correct folder and it gets applied... I was hoping the ARM architecture might get away from the issue. My mate has a N2 so perhaps he can test my handiwork before mine arrives.
I built the non-realtime 6.2 kernel  with Bookworm and XFCE first then added the patch. Its still compiling but it did ask if I wanted to choose the fully preemptible kernel (PREEMPT-RT) so here is hoping. Images will be in my drive folder eventally. in an armbian folder

If its an older I5 and Mint 20 is OK a 4.19.x RT kernel is likely to fix the issue.

Also the ping shows a 352 usec max which is pretty bad even it its the first ping

I think the issue is he needs probe basic so needs a 5.x kernel or above to sort out Python versions. But I'll pass that on.
I'm not 100% sure if the ping was our best and final result. I had a feeling it wasn't

Now it's over 24 hours. LCNC runs without problems and without error messages. I think the 6.1 PREEMPT kernel has brought the breakthrough.
Thank you very much for your help. Without you I would have despaired.

Default python versions are distribution linked and not determined by Linux kernels

I also saw this error.  the machine has proven itself for the last several years running lcnc 2.8 and probe basic py2 version with zero network or latency warning errors.  i just updated to linux debian 11 bullseye and lcnc 2.9 and saw the read error the OP posted.

the system is:

ASRock H97M Pro4
G3258 pentium processor
16gb ram

LCNC 2.9
Debian 11 Bullseye
Linux 5.10.0-21-rt-amd64 kernel

I did just go through and reset the network using the terminal to the following settings to see if it will help:

and i ran a latency test which isn't as good as the original on the older version.. results of the new latency test below:

here is the ping results on this setup, I will report back if i encounter the error message again.

Unfortunately the 5.10 Debian RT kernel is really bad Ethernet latency wise
(latencies up to the ms region)

If nothing else helps you may need to upgrade to a 6.x kernel
