will this converter work? I see from the GS2 manual I cannot use the rs-232 5v to power any external device, this one has a 5v power input so I could run that from the 5v on the 7i76e card?

For modbus control of a VFD it is usually easiest to connect to the PC via a USB or RS232 adapter rather than through Mesa hardware. Unless you have the skills to write your own drivers for the mesa hardware to control your VFD. (I certainly don't)

would you use rs-485 or rs-232? I see a couple adapters, looks like rs485 would be cheaper but disregarding cost would it be better or worse?

I am currently using the Automation Direct one you linked to to control 8 VFDs on a gang router. It works OK but I'm getting a lot of com errors. I have tried 2 different RS232 (DB9 port) to RS485 adapters, and have not been able to get one that works for me. The first one I tried I did not notice when I bought it can only transmit, it can't receive, it worked as good as it was supposed to, but wasn't what I wanted. The second one I bought I couldn't get to work at all. It's been a frustrating subject for me.
