ok, operator error. I left out wire #6 on the adapter.

now when I turn it on it runs slow and errors the VFD. I think its the ramp up, but it just worked with the pins jumped.

update. I had set the VFD to high torque start, that was the issue. I then set it for scurve start 5sec, scurve stop 5sec and its all working great. It will start from 0 using the GUI tool and everything. So this is done I think.

Now I would like to have the encoder output displayed. I set this up using an AB with index encoder wired to the 7i76e encoder input pins but I dont know how to read it to see if it is operating properly. Any ideas?

You can use halmeter to check the encoder operation and scaling

Spindle encoders should be scaled so that 1 spindle turn reads as a feedback position change of 1.00
That is, hm2_7i76e.0.encoder.00.position should advance by 1.00 for each spindle turn

Index can be checked with halcmd (setting the index enable signal) and halmeter
(watching the index enable signal to see the it gets cleared on index detection)

can I turn the encoder by hand or does the spindle need to be running (for enable signal)? If Im looking for the position change to be 1 on each turn sounds like it will be really fast if the spindle is running

You can do this all by hand

(unplug the VFD for safety)

im not getting any signal on the HAL pin. I would like to test the encoder but Im not an EE, the encoder is a BEI H25D-SS-1800-ABZ-7406R-LED-SM16-S. Since its an older one Im having trouble decoding the serial number. from what I have found it is

H25 model
D square flange
SS shaft seal
1800 counts per rev
ABZ a, b and index
7406 (R) Open Collector: Current sink of 40 mA max. Current sourced by
external pull-up resistor. When called out as 7406R, pull-ups are
internal and sized at approximately 100 ohms/volt and current
sink is limited to 30 mA. Output can be pulled up to voltage other
than supply voltage (30 V max) when the 7406 is used without
internal pull-ups. Voltage regulator can be used to allow supply
voltage up to 28 V (called out as a special feature). Supply current
is 100 mA typical, 120 mA with internal pull-ups. The 7406R is
replaced by the 4469 or the 7272 in system upgrades, or with
the 7273 if external pull-ups are used.

LED cant find this
SM16 connector
S special order but dont know what it is

Can I hook up power and ground and probe the A,B and Z outputs?
