ok, so i have installed and flashed my card. but I cant seem to get the 7i96 config to install, I cant even get past the first step of the python3-pip etc install. its telling me it cant find the files. any thoughts?

That's the kernel info
The LinuxCNC version is on the top bar of the LinuxCNC GUI so if you
launch LinuxCNC (a sim config so you don't require hardware setup)
you should see the version

Unfortunately, thats the wrong Linux kernl version for the 7I96, you need the uspace version of LinucCNC and a Preempt-RT kernel:

ok, so the Debian 9 stretch on the linuxcnc download page is appropriate? im not sure what I am looking at in that url you sent.

Yes though you would need to then upgrade to LinuxCNC
2.8 or master to get the 7I96 support in pncconf
