yes, but usually if you only apply power, they start talking to the encoder, and you can listen to that.

I have read somewhere (possibly here, possibly cnczone) that the Okuma encoders manage to store state without using a battery.
Which sounds like voodoo, I admit.

Normally if it is a absolute encoder, there would be a battery pack somewhere along where the encoder plugs in, but I can't find one,

I sent some messages to a okuma technician to ask if he knows how the serial position command protocol works, so waiting for feedback, and will report

So got a reply from my okuma technician connection, an he replied that he has no idea. Its a secret he says...

It might be possible to reverse-engineer it.
I am not sure what tools one would use to link in, I would probably start with an oscilloscope in an attempt to find the bit-rate

Henk also suggested the same thing. So I will try and find out where another machine is with the same drives, and ask if we can go there to run the osciloscope. I will report any progress.
