Strange behaviour - thought it was X axis problem but not sure?

For the tearout, try using a downspiral. looks like either the bit is not sharp or you need to use a down spiral bit.

Thanks for the tip bevins. The bit was just a really cheap eBay one but I've ordered a better bit to try and will give that a go.
