I was unable to fix this I ended up finding out that the machine I was running this on doesn't like any version of 64 bit mint setup I tried. I ended up using a 32 bit version with the old 3.4.9 RTAI kernal and it worked. I even was able to upgrade from 2.7.8 to the latest master 2.9 pre. It took a bit to get the .hal and ini files converted over but I am now up and running trivkins with 5axies. I am still trying to figure out how to use switchkins to be able to use TCP. I have a AB table-head arrangement that I need to see if I can get the AC or BC table-table configs to work.

Well, if you decide you want to move to a newer system and kernel in future, you know where to ask.
3.5.9 is a pretty old kernel by now.
