Oh ok + and - will do fine.
If you do not mind, can you change the pins fro one of the axis, say X in the hal file or in stepconf, so
x step becomes x dir
and
x dir becomes x step

If that does not work, add these lines to the hal file, if they are not there already:
setp parport.0.reset-time 5000
addf parport.0.reset base-thread
By any chance, does that machine use SloSyn motors and drives ? Those do need much longer timings.

I clicked the presets button reversed them and now is working! axis are moving!
