Can you measure the direction lines to see if they change when jogging in either direction?

You dont need them. Linux already has a driver.

But do they change in the hardware? (voltmeter or even a LED would work to check)

I changed that in HAL, ran my config, Got warning "Linux parallel port @ 53267 not found"
