Hello All,

I am planning to build a Robo for dispensing the adhesive/sealant. I am very new to this field, so I started reading around on how can I make. After looking at various software around, I decided to use LinuxCNC.

Now 2nd thing came as which board to use, I observed that board needs to be compatible with LinuxCNC (Please confirm if my understanding is correct). Again after looking around over net and discussion, I found that Mesa boards are best suited for LinuxCNC (again someone please confirm, or else if any other option, would be really helpful)

I believe I will need board which supports Servo motor for controlled movement of dispenser (I need only 3 axis)  and a solenoid control to start and stop the dispenser. Unfortunately I have very little knowledge about the board and so unable to select the one for my need. Any help in this regards would be really great.

Thanks & Regards,
Vandana

What type of servo?
What control type do they use?

Depending on size / speed / power requirements this might be do-able with steppers and cheap parallel port breakout.

Is this a hobby one-off or a proposed commercial product? The advice we give would be very different in the two extremes.

Thanks for reply Andy. I am just starting with experiments however, plan is to make this as a commercial product. I started experimenting as started getting enquiry on such product.

As I don't have much experience on hardware. So from different reading I understand, it will be difficult for me to work on breakout board unless I get proper support. So thought better to start with known working board.

I will be using Linear Servo motor and 2 way Solenoid valve

Possibly a raspberry pi would suit as the controller. Then either an Ethernet or SPI. Board. Mesa 7C81 perhaps? Or 7i92.
There are more expensive boards with screw terminals for more convenient wiring, but those are the cheapest ones.

Really great to know that if i use raspberry pi then i don't need mesa board.. I went in this direction as i want to provide touchscreen display instead of pc control.

I was not sure if i can connect servo motor and solenoid controller with raspberry pi..

Thanks a lot for quickly helping me out in this as mesa boards not available iin India but raspberry pi is. easilly available.

I was suggesting Pi-compatible Mesa boards. You can do some things with the Pi GPIO but I think that for what you are describing an add-on FPGA board will be necessary.

What do you currently have? Maybe start with that and then decide what needs to change.
