logout is just " exit " correct
and then the log in is automatic
i tried exit, and it shuts down the terminal window,
when i open the terminal window back up , i think i am logged in automatically
and i tried the stty line again , no luck.
i power cycled and still no luk
Does there have to be live activity on the serial port ??? for this to work?

what about something like this
" sudo apt-get install minicom # Install if not present
minicom -D /dev/ttyUSB0 -b 115200 # Connect to device at 115200 baud
but replace the usb0 with S0, and then fix the rest baud R, and parity, etc

i must be doing something pretty dumb, i tried this on the ancient Dell D620 dual booted with windows XP and Ubuntu14? from about years ago and i got the same problem. This is the known good computer to interact with the robot arm , but in windows XP with putty or the robot native software that i think was windows 95. This native software is not perfect and won't compile a program, but it will run the arm from the terminal
So maybe it is not my current version of ubuntu12.
Please don't ask how i got the ubuntu 14.

Ok this has got way off topic and is starting to get into topics far away from Linuxcnc.
For a detailed how-to on the use of the serial port please read this document.
tldp.org/HOWTO/Serial-HOWTO.html
This should cover everything regarding the serial port, the tldp site has a lot of docs regarding basic Linux usage.
Oh and please stop inserting random question marks, it's makes it hard to work out what you are on about.

thanks unknown, Sorry. Enough said. Eventually i wanted to try and get this arm under LinuxCnc control, So a tiny bit on topic, maybe i should have led with that. or started a new thread .
my servos, BOB, and power supply should be in by the end of the week. I have been reading about the HAL, and the stepconf wizard.
I will be using the clearpath SDSK-2321S-RQN DC servo
i am trying to read up on the stepconf wizard? that is next , and i need to read the servo manual as well
thanks

One should always RFTM, it's a good practice to follow unless you are quite financially well off, have plenty of time to spare and have the patience of a saint.
Or some other poor sod is setting everything up and you have 100% trust in them.

Good morning, i have most of my hardware. i have been able to get a very basic 1 x Clearpath SD 2321s servo to run on the linuxCNC jog.
My question Every time i shut down the system, my Stepconfig saved configuration disappears, and i have to re run stepconfig to get back where i started. The stepconfig program is set to save , so i get a shortcut for the files and a shortcut to open linuxCnc with that config.
i am guessing but is the failure to save the configuration due to the linuxCnc being run from a thumbdrive image?
How can i get the config to save thru a power cycle?
I am ready to move my little test setup to the actual machine to see if the new servos are going to be strong enough to get my mill table moving.
The old servos were SEM MT304,,, weighed 15 Lbs.
The new servos are tiny tiny in comparison and weigh about 2 lbs or less
thanks

i have tried several different times to save the configs, rename them, re locate them.
After a power cycle; LinuxCnc No longer appears in my Home, file syste, or user.
after i run a fresh stepconfig wizard the system runs pretty well, I get the desktop shortcut , but it won't save.
I did manage to get my mill table going I had a latency error, and I had to turn the max acceleration down a bit, but it mostly seems to run well. Or at least enough that i can assume that my servos are strong enough, and i can carry on with the hardware adapt to get the new servos connected and mounted to the machine.
I will have to buy some semi special timing pulleys to get the L size pitch with a .250" shaft bore.

You need to create a "persistence" file on the thumbdrive, search the Debian forum on how to do that.
Sorry but i have not done that in over 10 years.

Thanks Tommylight. I looked into the Debian Persistance stuff. Is there a reason NOT to put linuxCnc on my dedicated LinuxCnc computer? So i don't have to use the thumbdrive permanently I brought this up a few posts ago. This machine will eventually be living in the shop running the machine will be its only job
If i change to put the live linuxCnc image on my computer will it solve the Not saving the configuration file problem?
And i can change stepconfig wizard stuff at will, and just erase the old configs correct?
thanks
