Clearly I do not understand the significance of that Robert .
Dont really feel I want to. Just want something which will work .
Is this a peculiarity of 7i92 cards maybe? Might I be better using a different card or combination of cards .
Nothing has been simple with this machine

enp2s0 instead of eth1 everywhere
never use 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.121, the first is used by routers, the second is the default Mesa address.
Use whatever ELSE for the last set.
The first 3 sets MUST be 192.168.1.

Are you saying I can choose any 3 digits for the last set Tommy? and then change the address in the file to whatever I choose ?
Do I not somehow / somewhere have to assign a chosen address to the card?

To paraphrase tommylight here:
The mesa card is set for 192.168.1.121
You can use 192.168.1.XXX for you host PC address but
XXX must not be 0, 1,121 o 255
The mesa card is set for 192.168.1.121
You can use 192.168.1.XXX for you host PC address but
XXX must not be 0, 1,121 o 255

But do I not somehow have to assign the chosen address to the card ???

No, the card address is fixed at 192.168.1.121 if W6 is down
and 10.10.10.10 if W6 is up
You are assigning a fixed IP address to your host computer
and 10.10.10.10 if W6 is up
You are assigning a fixed IP address to your host computer

Clearly I have my braces crossed !
So does my host computer not already have an IP address ??
So When I follow the instruction ""Configure network with static address
Add these lines to the file /etc/network/interfaces to configure eth1 with a static address:"" then I am assigning an IP address to the host computer which can have any 3 last digits of my own choosing as long as they are not one of the prohibited sets???
And do I change eth1 to enp2s0 ??
I have to say I am not yet following the logic of all this , but that does not really trouble me as long as i get the host to communicate with the mesa.

No it does not as there is no DHCP server to assign it an IP address, this is due to Mesa being wired directly to the PC and neither of those having the DHCP capability since there is no need for it, this is set once and never again. So does my host computer not already have an IP address ??
Yes. So 192.168.1.2 will work, same as everything up to 192.168.1.253, with 192.168.1.121 excluded as it belongs to the Mesa board.
So When I follow the instruction ""Configure network with static address
Add these lines to the file /etc/network/interfaces to configure eth1 with a static address:"" then I am assigning an IP address to the host computer which can have any 3 last digits of my own choosing as long as they are not one of the prohibited sets???
Yes. That is the name of the network card on your PC.And do I change eth1 to enp2s0 ??
