That takes a long time on SD cards, so wait a bit more.Either the system freezes immediately after the restart following the notification: resize file system.
This is for KVM, it can be safely ignored as it has no impact on functionality.
This is preceded by a message: Error: cpu 0 not supported

That's _not_ the same problem, as far as I can tell. This is a different problem to the ones that I hoped to have solved with the new SD card.
1) Ignore the "KVM CPU0 Not supported". You do not need KVM to run LinuxCNC. In fact it would be foolish to try
.
2) Give it some time when resizing the file system. If 10 minutes doesn't see signs of life then try rebooting as-is.

I have the same problem with both version
...

Or the system freezes as soon as the desktop is displayed.

Maybe wrong place but:
Not with lcnc I remarked that in upgrading pi4 with latest raspbian they loaded new bios/firmware. Maybe it could be a solution to run till newest Raspbian to get compatibility of the bios....

Thanks
I tried it with SanDisk 32GB Extreme µSD cards, I replaced 3.
But I'll try another one.
