I'm not sure about cleaning--its a brand new computer. System runs fine when linuxCNC is not running. Hangs intermittently when it is running. Debian 11, recent kernel.

Linux sdcc12 5.10.0-10-rt-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_RT Debian 5.10.84-1 (2021-12-08) x86_64 GNU/Linux

Disable wireless via BIOS (sometimes it's hard when you have to search the specs of someone else's PC). I'd be inclined to reseat the RAM, but it's up to you. Actually a memory test wouldn't go astray.

Boot from the Linuxcnc 2.8.2 iso, run linuxcnc and see what happens.

Boot from your HDD run linuxcnc and see what happens.

If it hangs

Boot from the Linuxcnc ISO, mount your hdd and have a look around in mount point/var/log
Pay attention to kern.log & syslog

Remeber these are the logs on your HDD not the log files of the Live session.

If it doesn't hang it could be the wireless card.

Ok it would seem the wireless is actually a mini PCIe card. Rather than disable it pull it out so it has no effect on the above testing.

That's a very clever idea. I had no idea that modern PCs might have removable Wifi cards. But it doesn't work. I installed the 2.8 .iso and the system hangs during the boot sequence (after the install completes). Debian 11, which is installed on a separate partition still boots.

Sounds like the earlier 2.8 kernel is getting confused with your hardware. The 5.1 kernel in Debian 11 has a lot more drivers available.
As an aside some of the USFF PCs like my Gigabyte Brix J1900 (this one isn't that small) needed yanking the wifi/bluetooth card out and replacing with a USB wifi dongle to avoid latency in the 300,000's

When you boot to the Buster version (2.8 iso) when you get to the grub screen, edit the kernel line by deleting "quiet splash", this should display the kernel boot messages and give an idea where you are crashing.

You might even have to disable wireless in the bios as well.

Sometimes "brand new" machines have buggy BIOS\UEFI that whilst it works with windows it takes the Linux devs a bit of time to catch up with a patch.

This problem won't be solved. I updated the BIOS and turned off Wifi in BIOS as well as removing the Wifi Card. I still can't install the 2.8 iso. I did manage to install version 18 Ubuntu, and then build an appropriate RT_PREEMPT kernel. This let me build and install linuxcnc 2.8.2. Jitter seems really high though (e.g, 50,000) so I think this might be a fail as well. I'm thinking about buying a drill press and going back to more traditional metal shaping.

Give this a try. Yes it will work on x86.

Don't try to update anything, we can massage things to get better latency, if needed. Are you wanting to use Parallel Port or MESA ?

What is the file? This is parallel port (Gecko G540). I just checked Best Buy and I think I can actually return this thing if I do it before Monday.

Sorry shared the md5sum rather than the ISO. Fixed below.
drive.google.com/file/d/1d7IEscVlyWoNZQe...s4D/view?usp=sharing

It's Mint 19.3 xfce with a 4.19.106 RT-PREEMPT Kernel, has worked on many machines.

But if you can return it that might be the go. I'd search the forum to see what machines are having the best luck with for Parallel Port latency.

Believe it or not an I have an Athlon X2 3GHz that gets insanely low latency when coupled with an AMD GPU. With just 4GB ram.
