the problem is that.
sudo apt-get install hostmot2-firmware-5i23
could not find hostmot2-firmware-5i23 package.

I've been thinking you are referring to trying to run linuxcnc, but I think you might be talking about pncconf?
Is this the error you are getting?:
If so, I think it's as "simple" as putting the firmware files in that folder. Firmware files are located here in the "Specification" tab:
store.mesanet.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=65
Though I am not exactly sure which files/folders go where, and how (it's not as simple as dragging and dropping into lib/firmware). Someone familiar with pncconf will have to provide better guidance here.
The other option might be to ignore the error, use 5i25 to make your config, and then manually change the config files to reference 5i23.

I have no clue on boards requiring firmware, it may be worthwhile posting in this section:

Another option is reaching out to Peter at Mesa via the contact info on their page. He's always responded and been helpful when I've needed it in the past. But do post your findings here if you get it sorted out that way.

Trust me Tom the path was right, double slash was just in the message. the hm2 folder in usr / lib / firmware did not exist. i copied hm2 from buster 2.9 master disk on usb stick and with root file manager on mx 19 put it in the right place it works regularly. sorry I didn't think about it before but this problem never occurred. the 5i23 will be old but runs servo threads at 8 khz

Glad you got it going!
I am curious, what exactly is in the hm2 folder? And if it's another folder, then what's in that folder, and so on?
Just trying to capture what exactly needs to go in there for the future.

the missing folder is in: / usr / lib / firmware it is called hm2 and contains the subfolders with the various mesa tabs. I am attaching mine that I copied.
I deleted some boards for the 1.6 mega limits of the forum but the structure is that.
