LinuxCNC Install using MX Linux 19.4 - Geared Toward New Users - Discussion was created by snowgoer540
EDIT:
I split the install thread and the discussion thread to keep the amount of info new users had to wade through to a minimum.
A link back to the install guide is here: forum.linuxcnc.org/9-installing-linuxcnc...red-toward-new-users
Note this guide is not limited to Mesa cards. If you don't have a mesa card, from Section 4 you can skip steps 3 through 5 and also steps 11 through 13. Additionally you can skip Sections 5 and 6.
I can update these sections to make that more clear, thank you for the feedback.

The 5i23 should work fine. I didn’t have to install anything additional to use the 5i25 that drives my table. Are you encountering an error of some kind?

Hostmot2 or mesaflash?
Pretty sure hostmot2 is just a copy/paste affair followed by loadrt in .hal, while mesaflash can be found as a binary and started as a normal program or downloaded from git, compiled and installed.

Mesaflash would make more sense... There are directions to install mesaflash in the docs here.

This is from the man page for hostmot2:
"The hostmot2 firmware files are supplied by the hostmot2-firmware packages, available from linuxcnc.org and can normally be installed by entering the command "sudo apt-get install hostmot2-firmware-5i23" to install the support files for the 5i23 for example."
