New Project in the Works Plasma 7i96s with 2 THCad2

Category: Show Your Stuff

Thanks for the heads up, I have seen those issues on a Wright CNC table running Mach3 super annoying. For the extensions I did not think to see if they are shielded or not guess ill go look it up.
I do have a 32 inch LCD that on occasion I throw the screen up to when I'm not babysitting the table and haven't had an issue on that one.
I Should upload images of the current setup table and old electronics.for This Build I'm using end crimps and heat shrink on all the wires and trying to reduce the number of cables that run through the cable carriers.

Just a friendly warning, USB extensions usually work ok if the cable is good and shielded, HDMI will most probably not work due to interference from plasma pilot arc, but do give it a try if you can, before splurging for a larger monitor.
I have a video of plasma causing the screen to go blank in the other shop, from the shop with full metal cladding about 8 meters away, using a crappy 28 Euro display port cable. So price is not the deciding factor of cable quality, i have much chepaer cables that have no such issues. Lately i only buy Baseus, Anker, or Ugreen cables, so far no disappointment.
As for Mach4, i feel sorry for what you had to go through, from reading on the net it was worse than 3, by a lot.
Welcome to the dark side, once you get LinuxCNC running, you never go back. Having machines running for 15 years without a single issue, ever, is so calming... :)

Yes It has floating head. I used to have ohmic using two relays and it seemed to run ok with some intermittent issues. Somehow the retaining cap split at the threads and caused it to signal constantly.
I have a lot to still learn between hardware and linuxcnc so I might wire it in but leave it unused. This will make the 4th panel I have built previous boards were for Mach4 ESS/MB3.
Im hoping to have this panel finished out today, but thats what ive been saying for over a week

Bummer, I'll keep searching. how is linuxCNC able to control a potentiometer input? i must be missing a keyword, cant really find an answer. Thanks again for your help.

Analog inputs, some Mesa boards have them, some do not.
Just to be sure, you are dealing with analog output from Mesa to VFD, not an input.
Mesa analog output is for all intents and purposes, a potentiometer with 3 pins, so same as in schematics, only difference: mind polarity.

I have seen many issues using usb/phone chargers

That is very true, especially cheap china ones, they do anything from 4.2 to 6.8V without load and lack filtering, and some pose danger to life if wires are touched.
I used Samsung originals, never had issues, but i can not find them anymore.

I have made some more progress with this, I received a reply from Wabeco, they sent through the following diagrams, however i would still like to know more, (i.e. if there is possibly an RPM output and/or other means of control)

They also mentioned to contact MOBASI inn regards to a control software and motor wiring, ill give that a go

One is for the control panel that is visible behind the speed dial, the other is for the board on the motor.

Does the machine have a floating head with switch?
Use that, skip ohmic for now, make the machine works properly first without it.
I never use ohmic probing, floating head only. To much trouble for not much gain, and my machines are used by clients, so as simple as possible for daily use.
Rod and others have made huge improvements to ohmic probing as it was useless before due to water ingress inside the torch, so i am thinking of adding it to one of my machines for quite some time, just need time.

No need for hal--- just switch from world mode to joint mode, DRO shows both Y values there.
If they do change, se how much, see what joint is causing it, then use halscope if you need to find out exactly what is going on.
Edit:
Things that can cause that on tandem joints/axis:
Raked gantry
Rails not parallel
Encoder rust/wiring/interference
Encoder power marginally low or not clean
Mechanical issues binding/dirty rack-pinion/ loose bolts, loose motor-gearbox, to much pressure on rack, stripped belts, etc

See PCW's post above about timings, set the both step times to 5000, save, test.
If it does not work, wiring change :
Leave dir as is for now, just do a quick test by noving the step- wire to gnd on Mesa board.

Sorry been quiet there's 2 of us and about 40 machines and got dragged about.
Back onto looking at this again.
Think I've reset sudo pass word so will start with that and work my way through your suggestions guys. I do appreciate the help.
This machine has at least encouraged them to let me back up every other machine, progress.

One gave me a big electrical shelf, all metal, with grounding wire and big coper bridge. There is plenty enough space to put both the electronic and the PC inside, I would drill hole for aviators connection to the motors and plasma cutter so the shelf can be moved independantly from the plasma table. Do you think it's a bad idea to have both (PC and electronic) in the same place ? Do you think it would be usefull to try to shield the electronic from the motor alimentation ?

I'm almost done with the mechanical part of the build, have received the drivers and the motor alimentation. Still lacking the 5v DIN alimentation and the limit switches. Hope I can soon start to wire everything and try the XYZ movement.

I hate feeling ignorant here but where does the 24v power get applied? I'm guessing this is the High Voltage side and is the voltage used for the sense but just want to be certain.
I built this circuit years ago for Mach 4 using two 12v relays and thought it was just a grounding situation where the nozzle touches the metal it completes the circuit and sends the signal.

Yeah my video there.
Of course you should buy an EtherCAT stepper driver like Rtelligent ECT60 or ECT86 for any real work.
I have two of them and they work really fine. Fit right in the cia402 hal module.
There are several other low-cost alternatives for Ethercat stepper drivers if you go to aliexpress. And other places as well.

This is just a hobby project to see what it takes to make an EtherCAT device. I intend to use it, but not more.

The ect60 has a really nice and smooth step generation, despite what I see with occasional missing data. I wonder how they do that.
