please give a clearer description of the issue. A screenshot would also be helpful.

GUI that somewhat resembles haas or fanuc workflow.

I actually really like the functionality of the arrow keys and pgUP and pgDN for jogging linuxcnc. Just mapping those keys to physically beefier switches for jogging would be great. A Proper real life feed rate over ride knob is great too. I actually use it more than feed hold on the Fanucs. I can turn feed all the way down, hit cycle start, then use the feed to "drive" the machine carefully when needed.

for me personally its mostly the ability to use physical buttons to navigate instead of a mouse. the backplot is cool but could be relegated to its own screen mode with perhaps absolute/distance-to-go ("position" screen on fanuc for example). Offsets, both work and tool, should have their own dedicated screen toggled by an "offsets" physical button. with ability to use arrow keys to navigate the columns and enter values. physical heavy duty tactile cycle start and stop buttons are a must for powerful machines, as sometimes time is of the essence when its plunging toward doom.

Chris thank you very much for the quick response. Indeed hal pushbutton has built in led (I missed that part my appologies)

Now, where do I entre the name of the led to be able to turn on/off the led with a hal pin

HAL Widget PushButton can have a LED controlled by a HAL pin.
Actually IndicatedPushButton can too, it just doesn't have the HAL pin controlled by the button.

This worked. I switched it to "UEFI only" and I got a different prompt in the installation. I still had to fight the process a bit, had to return to Discover disks, but it finally went through. Thanks for ending my hours of frustration :)

indicatorPushButton led does not seem to have an option to connect the led to a hal pin.
Is it possible to add an option to connect the led to a hal pin. Or even better to modify the regular halPushButton to have built in led that connects to a hal pin similar to indicatorPushButton
Thank you

Edit: I am using linuxcnc2.94 rip, debian bookworm, linux kernel 12.12 rt

What would be a short list of requirements for an industrial screen?
No axis movement without START button?
No graphics?
Mostly text styles or more modern graphical elements?
Multi function soft keys? Hardware only keys.
What target monitor size?
Etc.

Startup/Boot Mode = Legacy Only (options are "Auto" or "UEFI Only")

Try UEFI only, it works on some PC's just fine.

Category: Installing LinuxCNC

Hi,
Just received a refurbished Lenovo ThinkCentre M710q and am working on installing the latest "LinuxCNC 2.9.4 Debian 12 Bookworm PREEMPT-RT ISO".  Got it flashed to USB via balenaEtcher and can run the installer and the live version.  With the installer, I make it to the partitioning section and it fails with:  "The ext4 filesystem creation in partition #1 of SCSI1 (0,0,0) (sda) failed."  I'm hoping someone knows the magic sauce to get this machine running...

I have been using the default guided steps (Guided - use entire disk) for partitioning, not trying to do anything fancy.

In the BIOS I have set the following:
Security/Secure Boot = disabled
Startup/CMS = enabled
Startup/Boot Mode = Legacy Only (options are "Auto" or "UEFI Only")

I also tried disabling all the "Intel(R) Manageability", "Intel(R) Software Guard Extensions", "Intel(R) SIPP Support" in the Advanced section.  As an aside, should I disable "Turbo Mode" in the "Advanced/CPU Setup" section?

In the live session I can get to "GParted", should I try partitioning the drive there before running the installer or is this a bad idea?  I was hesitant to try that...

I'm not sure how to proceed, any advice is welcome.
Thanks
Tom

PS/FWIW I recently installed LinuxCNC to a laptop using ISO/balenaEtcher with no problems (other than the laptop not being suitable).

Hello Kieran,
A hardware driver such as mesa or ethercat when run will expose hal pins. You can use halshow to see the driver pins. These driver pins can now connect to hal components pins.
