Filipe should have 7I96S + 7I95T + 7I92TM later this month

We should have 7I97T protos (7I97 replacement) soon
7I77s will be a while as they require re-design

An interim solution for Analog drives is a 7I95T and a 7I83,
7I96S+7I89+7I83 or the 7I97T proto

The 7I77 replacement (7I77U) like the 7I76EU can do sinking or sourcing outputs
under software control

Trouble connecting Mesa 7i76e with Debian 12 Bookworm

Category: Installing LinuxCNC

Appreciate that…also I have noticed that my old setup has the firmware folder with the various Mesa boards but the new install does not…also I tried to get hostmot2 from the synaptic package manager in Debian 12 with the search results giving me nothing…if I go back to the original install and search hostmot2 it returns several items and shows I have them installed…is any of this relevant to the Debian 12 and or am I missing something?

Unless you have an older Mesa FPGA card like a 5I20, 5I23 or 7I43, you do not need the firmware folder

Trouble connecting Mesa 7i76e with Debian 12 Bookworm

Category: Installing LinuxCNC

Its generally better to use the 10.10.10.10 address on the Mesa card
as 192.168.1.xx is likely to overlap with addresses used for normal internet and
local network access. If you do make this change, you will need to change
the static IP address of the host interface connected to the card ( to say 10.10.10.100)

(This advice applies to all distributions)

Trouble connecting Mesa 7i76e with Debian 12 Bookworm

Category: Installing LinuxCNC

I’ve been running Linux Cnc on (i believe) Debian 9 Stretch distro, Mesa 7i76e, Gmoccapy for a few years now. In an attempt to switch to Debian 12 Bookworm so I can use Probe Screen i partitioned my drive and did a fresh install of Debian 12 and probe screen, which all went as expected. I am now having trouble getting a connection to my Mesa card. I believe I may know the root of the issue. In my old setup (which is currently being used in the meantime) I do not believe I switched from the default IP of 192.168.1.121 to 10.10.10.10 . This always worked fine as long as I wasn’t connected to the wireless connection, which I didn’t really need. So I guess the first basic question is, with the new distro is it imperative for functionality to switch the 10.10.10.10 address? I do see the section about setting a static IP in the Debian 12 or higher instructions. I tried this but did not switch the jumper on the board. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

EtherCAT System Implementation of JMC Ethercat Servos

Category: EtherCAT

if the nema 23 worked before then the 180w servo should work too. personally find servos better too. They are more dynamic and easier to tune if you have good manuals. but tuning these jmc servos is not easy. rod is right it's going to be a long road with ethercat. I also only started with a laptop, one servo and the Mesa 7i76e on the table. and when that worked i bought more. a servo with a brake is recommended for the z-axis.

if you want to try ethercat then try one and see what works. but there are not many ethercat users here who can help. otherwise a Mesa 7i96s and step/dir servos would be good choices for this machine

Ref topic: Mesa ethernet setup for 7i92, 7i96, 7i76E and other ethernet Mesa boards.
forum.linuxcnc.org/27-driver-boards/3559...ethernet-mesa-boards

The above topic is locked so I can't reply to it but this is an additional step if you are using WiFi or other additional nework connection:

When editing the Mesa ethernet connection as per the original topic instructions, click on 'Routes' and select 'Use this connection only for resources on its network'.

This will stop other network request (Firefox etc) from trying to route through the Mesa card.

Script for automated testing of computer latency.

Category: Computers and OS's

I am running the lcnc-hw script and I have a few issues/questions/comments.

1. This link in the script is no longer valid: page='vimeo.com/150574260'
so I replaced it with this random one.  'vimeo.com/169701518'2.

2. I was getting this message and the suggested solution didn't work.
Kernel modules data:
Check if pcspkr is loaded: Yes, may cause bigger latency.
can be eliminated using:  sudo echo "install pcspkr /bin/true" >/etc/modprobe.d/pcspkr.confI

I ended up adding "blacklist pcspkr" to "/etc/modprobe.d/intel-microcode-blacklist.conf" and that worked.

3. Should I be concerned about these:
.Missing chrome or resource URL: resource://gre/modules/UpdateListener.jsm
Missing chrome or resource URL: resource://gre/modules/UpdateListener.sys.mjs

4.  There are never any latency results listed at the end of the .hw file.

5.  What numbers should I be shooting for if I am using a 7i76E?  Are these numbers good? Good enough?  Keep trying?

Thes are the last results in my .lat file.
598 s  servo min: -80.000 us max:  87.100 us sdev:   4.300 us
599 s  servo min: -80.000 us max:  87.100 us sdev:   4.300 us
600 s  servo min: -80.000 us max:  87.100 us sdev:   4.300 us
601 s  servo min: -80.000 us max:  87.100 us sdev:   4.300 us
601 s  servo min: -80.000 us max:  87.100 us sdev:   4.300 us
602 s  servo min: -80.000 us max:  87.100 us sdev:   4.300 us
603 s  servo min: -80.000 us max:  87.100 us sdev:   4.300 us
603 s  servo min: -80.000 us max:  87.100 us sdev:   4.300 us

I attached my .lat and .hw files.  I will post my results in the proper results page when I get the results that I think are final.

7i76E any updates?

I agree with Tommy - the 7i96S + 7i84 is a powerful combo.

If you want two smart serial cards, the 7i96 only has one channel (I think that's the term) directly available, and one expansion port.

I wanted both a 7i84 and 7i73 for field IO and operator panel... so the easiest thing was to get a 7i85s rather than a sserial expander.  Not much price difference and allows future stepgens and linear scale inputs.

Thanks tommylight . After looking them over I see what you mean, and basically they are the same price when combined.

7i76E any updates?

May i suggest:
7i96S and 7i84 = 5 stepgens, spindle with encoder, and plenty of IO, mixed mode IO so 5V and/or 24V as 7i84 has two separate supplies and easy to wire with a cut off CAT5/6 cable.
or lately i am aiming for 7i96S and 7i77 as it is the definitive "be all, end all" combo, and it can be readily found.
And keep in mind that 7i96S can have many more stepgens/PWM/encoders on the IDC26 headers.

Thanks PCW. Is the current best thing the 7i92TF or M and 7i76 combination, at least for this year?
I am just trying to plan a few up coming builds.
