What does it take to make the spindle turn in reverse? Does any combination of the outputs make the spindle turn backwards?
Start LinuxCNC and set the spindle running at 300 rpm.
Now, open a terminal window.
You can now control the pins manually, to see what happens
Will run through all the combinations. If none of them result in the spindle turning backwards then the problem is in your hardware, not the HAL.
When you have finished experimenting:
You will need to re-start LinuxCNC to get back to Linuxcnc having control of the spindle.
Start LinuxCNC and set the spindle running at 300 rpm.
Now, open a terminal window.
halcmd -kf
unlinkp parport.0.pin-16-out
unlinkp parport.0.pin-17-out
You can now control the pins manually, to see what happens
setp parport.0.pin-16-out 1
setp parport.0.pin-17-out 1
setp parport.0.pin-16-out 0
setp parport.0.pin-17-out 0

exit

My spindle motor is DC so reversing the polarity reverses the spindle . I have done this with a simple DPCO reversing switch.
I have now replaced this with a reversing relay which in turn is operated by a relay on a small multi board
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/282576987893?var=581748286755
This relay operates when an input signal is grounded and I have proved this
I will try the procedure you outline and will report back.
Thanks again

Please bear with me .
It looks like I may have been supplied a relay board which requires 9v to operate .
Will try to sort this out and come back again

So am now back to "round off"
And to apologise for consuming the time and efforts of all those who contributed .
It did turn our that my relay board was a wrong un, So I wasted a lot of my time and effort trying to make it work (and a lot of time and effort from you guys trying to resolve my problems )
One problem was that as with all stuff from Ebay the instuctions are non existent .
It took quite a bit of research to discover that this board ( while having an input requirement of 5-24 v ) needed a 12v input , a minimum of 9v so was just not going to respond to a 5v pin signal from a parallel port .
And all these boards look the same , so with the absence of instructions it is easy to be mis-led
All was not lost though.. The advice on the Hal formats to permit the correct signals to be created at the pins (and inverted ) has been invaluable .
I have moved another couple of steps forward with front and back tools , and got spindle reversing working , so without adding a turret I am reaching the limits of the capabilities of this machine . Need to play now and make some components and some chips
Thanks again guys !
