This is the one I’m going to follow, I haven’t seen it before, but I started a similar idea in "show your stuff."

i was not happy with the force to spin this thing but it seems the bigger you go the greater the torque needed based on some digging with manufacturer specs i found. i found these that i could buy over seas but they require 3.5 Nm of torque. i'm not sure if that is breakaway or running torque? i'm thinking it's breakaway but i am not sure at this point. if i can figure out a way to test this so i can get a feel for it i might be at a fork in the road moment and end up just biting the bullet and buying these is it seems better than what i was seeing with what i was doing. 3,5 Nm seems like a lot of torque needed?

i have a question for anybody who does rotary plasma cutting. what kind of rpm range do you need on a rotary plasma system on the rotary axis? i'm checking into unions and these have a 100 rpm limit unless you upgrade the seals then i think they can do 300 rpm which is probably overkill. is 100 rpm enough or do i need a little extra. i'm guessing the part diameter factors in since the piece is rotating but i'm just looking for a general range of speed needed if anyone has a moment to reply.
thanks in advance

1-3m/m should be enough for cutting, so depending on tube diameter adjust accordingly by multiplying that diameter with the PI value of 3.1415....

i guessing the 1-3 m/m is m/min? metric conversions between units is not exactly my thing
but if that is the case 120ipm is the high side. so it looks like things move pretty slow. 1 inch tube would probably be on the small side and spin the fastest so that's around 38rpm give or take.

my first attempt at a rotary union ended up being a bust. i was going to just eat the cost and buy these but something the manufacture said during a response made me pause on that idea. i was told a 2 Kw motor was the requirements to drive one of theirs. my plan was to drive two of these in series so a 4 Kw motor to do this seemed like a deal breaker. so i decided to take another attempt at one. i got tired of looking for a sealing solution from the manufactures that would work with common stock size and trying to find a certain type of seal in the size i needed. So i did what i had to and took matters into my own hands and designed my own and made a mold to cast them myself. so i will either get thing to work or go down swinging trying

I'm working on a second version of a rotary union, i feel good about this one working but until it's built and tested it's all wishful thinking
I'm just going to make short videos as i go and post progress. it seems like it is an interesting topic, and it seems justified to spend the extra time on that end.
