I tried to find something to help you to implement your idea but the taloot idea is far the simplest one.

I was talking about range of the sensor.

Resolution of the sensor is 0.5mm.
Sensing is very fast, and torch starts cutting in 1 second.
I will try myself then I can reach a conclusion

I was talking about your protective mechanism against dirt. I see, resolution. laser i saw using fiber very small and high precision but expensive...maybe they just use air to keep clean its so small.
Usually i just ask seller if work or not for determined application but you pretend to use one with more accessible price for everyone and its great so i trough because already in industry they use it maybe somewhere is wrote how they do it and its just a matter to adjust for your need.
Hard explain my self because im not english speaker.
