Preference File was created by phillc54
If no preference file exists, it is created on loading a GUI but it doesn't seem to follow some selections made in the screen_options widget.
notify_option, catch_close_option and play_sounds_option are set to True in the .pref file regardless of the checkbox value.
I haven't tested others as it may be something I am doing wrong.
Is the only way to change these from a user point of view, by manually editing the .prefs file.

Probably the first time it runs it saves the default of the preference file, which might not be the default of the widget. I'll see if I can make that work better.
If you edit the preference file before you run, it should honor it.
Currently there is no widget for user adjustment of preferences directly. I'll have to think about how to do that as currently each widget uses the preference file individually. I'm sure I can come up with something.

Thanks, at least I know I am not doing it incorrectly.

I've also noticed that settings in the pref file are ignored. For example, no matter how many times I delete the Welcome Message, it always pops up. BTW, nice to see a dedicated qtvcp section here.

I see that initial screenoption options are ignored by the preference file the first time run..I will fix that.
But after that the preference file should control everything... certainly possible that there are bugs. I might have also left a startup greeting in the handler file ...it would ignore the preference file. I'll check soon for that.
Keep the bug reports coming:)

I found a bit of time and updated screenoptions a bit.
default preferences should follow the designer selections now.
I added a 'notify_start_greeting = True' to the preference file, so you can avoid the initial notify greeting.
I see there are quite a few options not adjustable in designer but I ran out of time to add them...
Let me know if this work helped.

If I edit the pref file and set:
notify_start_greeting = False
it just sets it back to True on the next run.
Same with notify_start_timeout, if I set it to 0 it gets reset to 5.

Strange it works for me on my system.

I edited the .pref file, then started linuxcnc. I'm going to do another update and try again.
