I must not have been caught up with the latest update because it works now. Sorry about the false alarm.

Nooby question - what is the best method to ensure we have the latest build/release without losing any local changes to hal files?
I am also trying to find out why the Override Limits tick box is greyed out.

the newer kernels from 2.7+ will not have any changes
if you come from 2.6 or even lower you shout consider to regenerate the Machine and benefit from the new interpreter
and as you do this maybe go to a SUPERGUI like Dragon QTpyvcp

Updating Linuxcnc should not change your configuration unless something you are using changes. It shouldn't. You are on 2.8 so a move to 2.9 would be seamless. The big change was from 2.7 to 2.8

Override limts is greyed until you hit a limit switch.
Is this not the case for you?

QTDragon is not an officially supported GUI. Officially, it's an example of what you can build with the QTVCP framework. However, if you want the latest files, you can directly download from Dropbox at www.dropbox.com/sh/348e4qenyyow2vl/AACRe...rSWlptHaO-sYDPa?dl=0

Thanks Chris
I have hit a software limit not a physical limit switch. This just me learning Linuxcnc after using Mach 3 for a while
